SAY NO TO TESCO GREYHOUND RACING PROMOTION

Greyhound Action Ireland appeal to Tesco Clubcard Deals to remove their Irish Greyhound Racing deal from their brochure. Apparently 10 euro in clubcard vouchers will get you 40euro to spend at the Greyhound track. They say ‘experience the pace, the thrills and excitement that is a night at the dogs’.

We say racing causes the deaths and injuries of thousands of dogs annually. Dogs regularly found with mutilations, some drugged, burned, drowned , shot or just dumped in Ireland. This is well documented in the press. Over 25,000 Greyhound pups are born in Ireland annually. These are just the ones who are registered, others are killed at birth or as saplings due to no prospects at the track. See www.greyhound.org.uk for videos and more information in our IRELAND section.

Inspired by Tunisian demonstrators, thousands of Egyptian protesters on Tuesday gathered in Cairo and other major cities, calling for reforms and demanding the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, The anti-government protesters, some hurling rocks and climbing atop an armoured police truck, were chanting slogans against Mubarak, who has ruled the country for three decades.Downtown Cairo came to a standstill with protesters chanting slogans against the police, the interior minister and the government, in scenes that the capital has not seen since the 1970s.

On Thursday 20th January An Bord Pleanála announced their decision to approve the Shell high pressure raw gas pipeline. This is the last chance to resist the plan by the Irish Government, state bodies and Shell to force their will on communities and on the country as a whole, regardless of proper process, economic sense, people’s safety, environmental laws and human rights. Whilst the people of Ireland are being crippled by the cuts in public services and forced in to huge EU and IMF debt, the great gas giveaway is the elephant in the room that could be our solution. The unjust deal can be renegotiated as we have successfully seen in other countries. The people of Ireland should have a say in how we sustainably manage our natural resources. The struggle against Shell is a struggle for everyone in Ireland. You can be part of it. read full story / add a comment
