Recently returned from a stint in Palestine, the place that most struck me was the city of Hebron. It is here that the illegal settler policies of the Israeli government has led to the most conflict and it is here where I saw some of the worst poverty in the West Bank. read full story / add a comment

The United Nations' convention on the rights of persons with a disability does not confer any particular right on anyone. As a mental patient I have no more rights with it as I might have without it. However the UNCRPD has a political effect. The Irish Government must repeal the Lunatics Act of the 19th century to make Irish Law consonant with the UNCRPD. That old act is long and detailed and makes elaborate provision to prevent the exploitation of lunatics i.e. mental patients. But, it seems, a new law is required introducing assisted decision making by patients rather than providing an authority to make decisions on our behalf. read full story / add a comment

On November 19th the Tánaiste (Vice-Prime Minister in Ireland) Eamon Gilmore, addressed the parliamentary questions raised by TDs Maureen O’Sullivan, Clare Daly and Seán Crowe, in relation to growing concerns about the escalation of political repression in Colombia. In recent months, scores of left-wing activists, trade union organisers, protesters and human rights’ defenders have been murdered. Many more have been imprisoned, injured and harassed. read full story / add a comment

In a recent story on this website it was reported that a number of companies who had acted as agents for Metro Property Group in Detroit are facing litigation and/or have ceased trading. Comments on this story were posted by an individual named Finn in which he or she openly accuses the plaintiffs in the lawsuit of serious criminal activity and bankruptcy. In May this year the Irish company, Brendan Investments, publicly backed Metro Property Group in Detroit and the individual named Finn appears to be posting on the company's behalf. read full story / add a comment

The Attorney General for Northern Ireland John F Larkin QC had called for an end to inquires into the Troubles and the death of civilians. However, this is not the first time the so-called rebel has refused to support an inquiry into innocent deaths. I transcribe below two letters I got from him. This man wrote these letters - fully aware that the several solicitors in Belfast took who took on this case would do nothing - and the last one Norman Shannon sat on it until it became Statute Barred. How can the legal system, both in Belfast and Dublin get away with this cover up. read full story / add a comment

Capitalism is destroying the planet. Now we suffer. The devastating horror unleashed by monster-typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) upon the eastern and central Philippines regions is unspeakable. As of writing, estimates of the number of casualties and actual damages are tentative because many areas remain isolated and communications, power, road and port systems are down. read full story / add a comment

Here are some examples how secret service work, it can be useful to those who don’t have experience with them. Of course, it has nothing with national security. In the West, they follow you on the basis of nationality, color of skin and religion. They make paranoia and create fears about immigrants in order to spread racism and justify repression (imprisoning and deportation) against immigrants. read full story / add a comment

I am involved with a number of groups that focus on opposing animal cruelty and from time to time I receive details of what people involved in controversial practises are getting up to. In particular I receive occasional information concerning what appears on a website called "Greyhound Nuts", a site that deals with aspects of Ireland's greyhound industry but specialises in promoting hare coursing. read full story / add a comment

Not only should abortion be legal but it also is well worth arguing that having children should be made illegal (as in a crime). Now here is a statement even most sleeping Americans would agree is a radical proposition (so radical in fact you almost never encounter it). And yet it is a very practical and sane proposition, even to its extreme, logical outcome, that is allowing our very own human species to become extinguished (as in extinct). After all the ecological system of this world doesn’t need the human species and would undoubtedly be better off without it. Why would a baby want, for example, to be born into a world of global warming? Or why would a baby want to be born into a world of diminishing resources, in respect to the perpetually growing world population? read full story / add a comment

Global ethical human rights will give the Lost generation of Youth a future. It really is a macabre understanding of peace and human beings when it is seen that only absolute control to crush potential is the way to achieve peace. In fact, in my view, it creates slaves and dangerous States which are not held to account. read full story / add a comment

Over the last couple of days we have witnessed massive media hysteria about the case of Maria, a young girl supposedly abducted by a Roma couple in Greece. DNA tests and Lombroso-style racial profiling [1] have come into action in a case that has stirred the irrational anxiety that feeds racism and bigotry. Beyond the fact that child abduction is a serious issue, the "whiteness" and "blondeness" of the alleged victim have been emphasised together with the "Roma" condition of the alleged culprits. Let us remember that this is taking place in Greece, a country where blatant racism (as expressed by Golden Dawn) is on the rise, so there are good reasons to be cautious about this whole case. read full story / add a comment

The controversial Shell Corrib gas pipeline project in Co Mayo has suffered a "major" setback after the Commercial Court today granted an order quashing the revised licence issued for the Shell gas terminal at Ballinaboy.
It appears to be a convenient coincidence for shell that this revised licence granted just as this years offshore work began, and was quashed just as the offshore work was complete! read full story / add a comment

Despite all the cultural and religious indoctrination (and presumption) to the contrary, to be born Homo sapiens onto this planet, even in these modern times of materialist comfort, is still far too much a curse. Of course no one will tell you you’ve been condemned to a life of questionable worth and meaning, albeit with plenty need to toil for one’s un-mitigating desires. Rather its expected you’ll inculcate the accepted lies, such as how precious life is, in general, as it is always presumed to be—and never question its ordained status or sacred value. Conditioned are you then to think you “should” be grateful for having been born into this human mess (more properly referred to as the insanity of humanity). read full story / add a comment
