Today, Thursday 9th July, about 50 members and supporters of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) held a loud and lively two hour demonstration outside the Israeli Embassy in Ballsbridge. Protesters chanted pro-Palestinian slogans and formed a ‘human wall’ at the gates of the embassy to symbolise the Apartheid Wall under construction by the Israeli government in the West Bank since 2002. Gardai informed the organisers that the embassy staff had all been given a half day due to the planned demonstration outside, meaning that the IPSC successfully closed down the embassy for half a day.

Colonel Luis Arce Gómez was the right hand man of Luis García Meza who headed up the bloody coup d'etat in Bolivia on the 17th of July 1981. His extradition to serve a prison sentence for abuses of human rights and international drug trafficking has long been sought and expected as the least sign that one really can squeeze blood from stones without resorting to magical alchemy or that elusive Nobel prize category of finest plasterers or Quantum brickies.

As of writing this man born in 1938 can only enjoy only sparse internet biographical referential coverage in either Spanish language or English. Though I'm sure we can correct that soon enough. We need to explain so much about the chap who as usurping minister of the interior counted on such luminaries and advisors as the convicted NAZI and ex-SS officer, Klaus Barbie as well as the Italian fascist terrorist, assassin of trade unionists & champion of arch-catholic values Stefano Delle.

Activists from Derry and Donegal have called for people to join in the creation of a “Tent City” at Free Derry Corner, this Monday, 13 July. The family-friendly action is to be in solidarity with Palestinian families whose homes are currently being demolished by the Israeli State. Families and individuals have been asked to come to Free Derry Corner between 11 am and 2pm on Monday, and pitch a tent if they have one. The area is to be cordoned off, in order to create a child-friendly space. read full story / add a comment

In recent weeks, EI member organisation Egitim-Sen and the Confederation of Public Employees’ Unions (KESK) .. have suffered a series of attacks by the Turkish authorities, including the occupation and searches of the trade union premises by the security forces, arrest and preventive detention of trade union leaders and the use of excessive violence by the police against teachers demonstrating peacefully (...) On 29 May 2009, EI, together with the ITUC, wrote to the Turkish Government to protest against these anti-union attacks. Egitim-Sen and KESK received support from many trade union organisations around the world. However the authorities disregarded the international appeals to stop the attacks. Join EI in our appeal to stop the attacks on trade unions! There are currently still 22 Egitim-Sen and KESK officials in detention, including the women secretaries of both organisations. I was never so glad as the day I quit drinking. Almost 20 years now. Alcohol is poison and destructive to the body. Worse, it lines the pockets of the rack renters. Come on Ireland. Awaken. The world fears that. Believe it. Marijuana is one of the most powerful expectorants known. It is a pain reliever, a euphoric, an appetite enhancer, and enhancer of certain other states of thinking and cognition familiar to its users, and very useful. Let us have some real Irish Green. read full story / add a comment

To mark the 5th anniversary of the International Court of Justice ruling on July 9th 2004 that Israel's Apartheid Wall was illegal and must be torn down, last Saturday, July 4th, Galway activists took to the streets to illuminate the reprehensible fact that the so called "international community" is still turning the blind eye to this egregious crime: Israel continues to construct this obscenity while The UN has taken no action to implement the ICJ decision and. with the exception of a few principled governments, states have put no pressure or sanctions, the EU continues to grant Israel trading privileges in violation of the ICJ's call on third states "not to recognise the illegal situation resulting from the construction of the wall" nor "to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation brought about by such construction." International business, as is its wont, continues to finance and provide material support to the Wall and settlements. read full story / add a comment

The footage for the first video, Shell to Sea : Loitering with intent near the Rossport Solidarity Camp, people's champion Margaretta D'Arcy investigates was shot on 29th June close to and at the rear of the Rossport Solidarity Camp, when the behemoth pipe-laying vessel, the Solitaire, was laying the pipe connecting Shell's Glengad compound and the gas head and when the camp was overtly and intimidatory policed with Gardai at the front and rear sandwiching the Shell to Sea activists and it was the latter melange of Guards and their black attired Public Order cohorts that the redoubable and much loved Margaretta D'Arcy confronted.

About 2,000 people attended the main rally, which was colourful, lively, loud -and a bit holy.

About 75 pro-choice demonstrators were as boisterous as the main rally passed them at the GPO.
