Nearly thirty cyclists who had started off from Merthyr Tydfil in Wales the previous day arrived in Ringaskiddy on the ferry early on Monday 24th of May. They passed through Cork city on their way up the west coast to Rossport, Co. Mayo, and were joined by a dozen-strong cycle contingent from Spain, who had cycled all the way from Madrid, also linking struggles against fossil fuel extraction in Spain with those in Wales and here in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

"On Saturday (May 15) the true nature of the Twenty-Six County state was once again exposed as the Garda violently attacked those who dare to oppose NAMA, the bank bailouts and the savage programme of cutbacks.

"The Garda response to éirígí’s protest was not the result of an operational blunder or lack of experience. The decision to attack peaceful protesters was both premeditated and well planned. And more importantly is was highly political. The Dublin government have clearly decided that the emerging resistance to their right wing economic policies must be crushed before it grows stronger." read full story / add a comment

The weeky protests in Nabi Saleh have quickly gained a reputation as the most violent of the West Bank demonstrations, last Friday's proved true to the norm where an arrested Israeli woman was repeatedly kicked and savaged on the ground by a Border Police thug and the villagers were subjected to blizzards of tear gas and live fire. This morning YouTube pulled the video (Nabi Saleh protest 14-05-2010 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OL3MOCi5JRU) showing the savage assault on the Israeli Anarchist Against the Wall activist on the weasel basis that: This video or group may contain content that is inappropriate for some users, as flagged by YouTube's user community. Gardai have again attacked campaigners protesting at the bank bailouts this time with batons and dogs. This morning around 7am four people got onto on the overhang of Anglo irish Bank and chained themselves together with a banner read that read 'People of Ireland Rise Up.' In the last half hour a force of some 50 police, secret police and dogs attacked them and their supporters on the ground with batons, fists and feet. At least six were arrested as a melee broke out on Dawson street. read full story / add a comment

For the record, I want to give my account of what I witnessed at the Dáil on Tuesday at the Right To Work Campaign march.

Having been at many demonstrations in Dublin over the past 15-20 years, it’s common knowledge that the gardai and mainstream media (RTE usually) always underestimate the attendances. From what I saw, 1700 - 2000+ people is a fair estimation of those that took part. Considering the bad weather and the fact that Dublin City Council had most of the march posters taken down beforehand, it was a good turnout. Hopefully, it will be built on.

Gone ... but for how long?
national / anti-war / imperialism / news report Friday May 14, 2010 09:57 by Shannonwatch   image 1 image
U.S. military traffic through Shannon was down significantly in April due to the spread of the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland. The ongoing presence of this ash in and around Irish airspace has now resulted in the re-routing of all troop and military cargo flights through different bases worldwide. Since early May there have been no U.S. Air Force cargo or troop carriers at Shannon. Clearly the U.S. military leaders are not prepared to risk having cargo or soldiers that are essential to their wars of occupation sitting on the ground in the west of Ireland. read full story / add a comment
