national / indymedia ireland / news report Wednesday October 27, 2021 23:22 by 1 of Indy

Indymedia Ireland was 20 years old this month, on Oct 10th in fact. It has been a long road to here and at times debateable whether it would survive in the latter years. This short article gives a quick overview of its history and where it is now.

Back in 2001 the big anti-globalisation demonstrations of Seattle 1999 were still fresh in people's minds when the first Indymedia centers were setup and the network was still rapidly growing. In Ireland back then there was a great need for an alternative voice and there was no central site that could been considered Left leaning.

Oscailt v4.0, the software used by Indymedia Ireland, has been released just 4 months after the last version. It can be downloaded from it's SourceForge homepage. This release introduce a long overdue feature of tagging for stories which have been a common feature for quite a long time with other software. The changes for this required considerable work to add in the management of tags and the integration of them with searching and database queries, newswire filters and their import and export. This release increase the compatibility level of Oscailt up to PHP 7.4. As with with previous release, the User Guide has been updated to document these changes.

The Indymedia website returns to service today after an almost two week outage from Sept 29th until today Oct 13th.

This was an unplanned outage and unfortunately it took much longer than expected to restore and may have led people to think we had shutdown permanently. We hope our contributors and readers will return and continue to make use of Indymedia for it's intended purpose of posting news, reports and events by the public and activist communities. read full story / add a comment

The software running the Indymedia Ireland website has been updated. It has some new features and improvements of which three will be of interest to users of this site.

The first is that you can now edit your own comments for up to 15 minutes after they are published.

The second is that during publish there are some basic tags built in to form a mini editor with the key ability now being able to quote text and it will get display indented and in italics -much like forum software does this. There are also buttons to make it easier to bold, italic, underline text and an Euro symbol.

The third is that the larger cover images for Youtube and Vimeo videos are now automatically retrieved and displayed within an article replacing the less attractive smaller thumbnail images. read full story / add a comment

The software used to run the Indymedia website has now been upgraded with the latest release (Oscailt 3.2) which now allows users to post stories and comments with multiple embedded videos and audios.

Previously you could only have embedded one video per story or comment. The embedded video was also recently upgraded a few months back to allow for embedded Politube.org video which are preferrable to YouTube videos because of licensing and the fact that they support independent media outlets and activists and are a non profit organisation. read full story / add a comment
