Shannonwatch welcomes the visit to Shannon Airport by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions. The visit which took place on October 2nd was a follow-up to a petition by Shannonwatch earlier this year. The petition called for the Government to investigate the use of Shannon Airport and Irish airspace for the transit of US armed troops, munitions and other war material, as well as for the refuelling of CIA-associated aircraft involved in extraordinary rendition. During their visit to Shannon, representatives of the Committee met with members of the Gardai including Chief Superintendent John Kerin and with airport officials before meeting again with Shannonwatch. They were informed that about 40,000 US troops had gone through Shannon so far this year. However Shannonwatch understands that airport officials said that US troops were not essential to the economics of Shannon Airport as they contribute relatively little, and that civilian passengers contribute far more with shopping, car parking and so on. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT), Ireland’s leading penal reform campaign organisation, has today (Wednesday, 17 September 2014) warmly welcomed the publication of the final report of the Strategic Review on Penal Policy as a blueprint for a fairer and more effective penal system. IPRT endorses the vast majority of the recommendations, and urges the Minister for Justice and Equality to consider their implementation in full. IPRT will closely shadow the implementation of the Review Group’s recommendations, to ensure that Ireland’s criminal and penal policy meets its stated goal of making Ireland “a safer and fairer place.” read full story / add a comment

Republican Network for Unity shine a light on the revolving door policy of the PSNI regarding ex-RUC officers.
15 years ago the Patten Report consigned the RUC to history and ushered in a new accountable police force, or so we were led to believe. Instead, the people of the 6 counties received an MI5 controlled militia with a revolving door for ex-RUC gunmen. Today (16th September) Drew Harris was appointed as deputy chief constable of the PSNI. Just like his senior George Hamilton, who was appointed chief constable earlier this year, Drew is an ex-RUC officer who was involved in a force that thoughtlessly used shoot-to-kill and oversaw collusion at the highest level read full story / add a comment

Press Release - Woodland League The public amenity forest at Gougane Barra, co Cork has been clear-felled for no good reason. This is the claim of an internationally renowned Irish tree-scientist and a number of Irish NGOs. In January 2014, Coillte, the Irish Forestry Board, contended that ‘sudden oak-death’ (Phytophtera ramorum) had infested the veteran larch trees in the forest and that urgent clear-felling was essential. Documentary evidence purporting to support this assertion dated July 2013 has been branded tenuous at best by Diana Beresford-Kroeger the renowned Irish tree-scientist who saw no sign of the disease while filming in the forest in August of that year. read full story / add a comment

WAKE UP COVENEY…..STOP THE LYING, -WE DO SNARE 6000 BADGERS A YEAR RANTINGS FROM OUR AGRICULTURE Minister in the video below "What we are continuing to do is have a humane and targeted cull of badgers which does not involve snares or anything like that. It involves trapping and catching badgers and putting them down in as humane a way as we can." EVEN BADGERS KNOW WHAT A SNARE IS! EVEN BADGERS KNOW WHAT A SNARE IS! SEE THE MINISTER LYING NOW …LINK HERE BELOW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oRSnDcJOxo&feature=you...1m52s Snaring IS the method used to trap badgers by the Department of Agriculture despite the Minister’s outrageous attempt to deny and conceal this fact. Who is he trying to hoodwink? The AOHS believes that the method of capture is a barbaric wire snare which holds the helpless badger in excruciating pain until it is dispatched by gunshot or clubbed to death the next morning at the earliest as some accounts by farmers have revealed. That is if the badger has not been strangled beforehand by the snares wire. When nursing female badgers are snared and shot, their cubs are left to starve to death underground. The DOA refuse to allow a period for lactating badgers to raise their young without risk of torture" read full story / add a comment

Greystones Harbour was opened to the public almost two years ago, in November 2012. The marina opened for summer 2013. However, despite written agreements and promises from the developer, the commercial fishers of Greystones have been refused access to the harbour and promised berths or moorings have not been offered to us. We are today entering the harbour and landing freshly caught fish, against regulations, as a protest against this continued exclusion from the harbour, which only two weeks ago included the removal of mooring cleats from the harbour’s north pier in order to prevent boats tying up. read full story / add a comment

The filming of scenes for Star Wars: Episode VII began yesterday on Skellig Michael in Co Kerry. Many have expressed outrage at the underhanded way in which this information was kept from the Irish public until a few days ago. The Irish Independent has learnt that when negotiations began over six months ago it was feared if news of the proposed filming leaked out it could attract opposition from conservation groups. Also, At a time when Gaza is suffering a genocide at the hands of the Israeli government, the Irish government has underhandedly permitted Disney, (a company which is on every boycott list of companies which support Israel), who acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4.05 billion (wiki), to come into Ireland and film on one of our most sacred and ancient sites. read full story / add a comment

The average Iris person is presumed to create 17 tonnes of carbon a year. This is called our carbon footprint. Since the ratification of the Kyoto agreement by Ireland 2002 which seen quotas on carbon been produced, the value of the carbon credit has realised real wealth. The average carbon credit in "laymans terms" trades on the open market for E20 per tonne. Companies with a big carbon production rate say 40,000 tonnes and a quota for only 10,000tonnes ,must purchase the deficit of carbon credits (30,000 tonnes) on the open market or invest in new carbon reducing machinery. read full story / add a comment

Niall Farrell of the Galway Alliance Against War is to be arrested on Friday, 1st of August on his return from abroad and sent to Limerick Prison for his involvement in a peace protest with Margaretta D'Arcy last September on the runway at Shannon airport. In June they were found guilty of having "interfered with the proper use" of Shannon airport and given a two week suspended sentence and what approximates to a €100 fine. Both refused to pay the fine or sign a so-called peace bond and Ms D'Arcy has since been imprisoned for her failure to comply with the Ennis District Court's ruling. read full story / add a comment

Good Energies Alliance Ireland (GEAI) views the latest developments where preparations for shale gas exploratory drilling has begun in Belcoo as a National, not local issue. Dr Aedin McLoughlin, Director GEAI, expressed extreme dismay. “Make no mistake about it – any exploratory drilling, with or without hydraulic fracturing, is part of the overall fracking process,” she said. “An exploratory well without hydraulic fracturing leads to more wells with “test fracks”, leading to full fracking as shale gas is extracted. In Belcoo, the first stage is starting, with the industry bleating their mantra, “This is only drilling, it’s not fracking!” When is fracking not fracking? When the industry wants to hide what is obvious – that a good result from this first exploratory well could lead on to more wells and more wells and a full-scale fracking operation with all its environmental and social issues.” read full story / add a comment

Did Abbot really think he could suppress a story like this? He seems intent on turning Australia into a dictatorship. KM Today, 29 July 2014, WikiLeaks releases an unprecedented Australian censorship order concerning a multi-million dollar corruption case explicitly naming the current and past heads of state of Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam, their relatives and other senior officials. The super-injunction invokes “national security” grounds to prevent reporting about the case, by anyone, in order to “prevent damage to Australia's international relations”. The court-issued gag order follows the secret 19 June 2014 indictment of seven senior executives from subsidiaries of Australia's central bank, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). The case concerns allegations of multi-million dollar inducements made by agents of the RBA subsidiaries Securency and Note Printing Australia in order to secure contracts for the supply of Australian-style polymer bank notes to the governments of Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and other countries. read full story / add a comment

We were soldiers in a wide variety of units and positions in the Israeli military—a fact we now regret, because, in our service, we found that troops who operate in the occupied territories aren’t the only ones enforcing the mechanisms of control over Palestinian lives. In truth, the entire military is implicated. For that reason, we now refuse to participate in our reserve duties, and we support all those who resist being called to service. The Israeli Army, a fundamental part of Israelis’ lives, is also the power that rules over the Palestinians living in the territories occupied in 1967. As long as it exists in its current structure, its language and mindset control us: We divide the world into good and evil according to the military’s categories; the military serves as the leading authority in deciding who is valued more and who less in society – who is more responsible for the occupation, who is allowed to vocalize their resistance to it and who isn’t, and how they are allowed to do it. The military plays a central role in every action plan and proposal discussed in the national conversation, which explains the absence of any real discussion of non-military solutions to the conflicts Israel has been locked in with its neighbors. read full story / add a comment

PRESS RELEASE - FRIDAY 11 JULY 2014 - ACCIDENT REPORT REFUSED Simon Coveney has refused to release the Department’s Report on the loss of 230,000 salmon in Bantry Bay last February. His decision claims that the work is not completed and that the public interest would not be served by the disclosure of the Department of Marine’s Engineering Division report. The storm on February 1, 2014, saw a cage break loose from its mooring and upend itself into another cage at Gerahies. Alex O’Donovan, Secretary of Save Bantry Bay [SBB] said in March of this year that after the official count on 19 February 2014 they understood that the farm had been ‘virtually wiped out’. Minister Simon Coveney subsequently confirmed the loss of 230,000 Salmon in the extreme weather event of 2 February 2014. Despite repeated requests, Friends of the Irish Environment [FIE] and Save Bantry Bay have been refused the Report, breaking Minister Coveney’s previous precedent of releasing such documents regarding salmon farm escapes. read full story / add a comment

The ghost of William Martin Murphy is haunting Greyhound, one of Dublin’s largest waste collection companies. In one of the most daring attacks on organised workers in recent years, the company’s owners are demanding that workers accept a pay cut of 35 percent. One morning in May workers arrived at their depot and were surprised to find new cabins in front of their place of work. Their managers were sitting inside them and, as each worker tried to enter the depot, they were asked to sign a document that would alter their conditions of work read full story / add a comment

A review of the Irish Greyhound Racing Industry by Indecon has said it believed that a “more severe system of sanctions” was needed to prevent animal cruelty in Racing. We in AFAR however feel that this statement is naive and is based solely on improving the Industry image to raise revenue. What is obviously excluded from the report is the DEATH RATE of ex-racing Greyhounds that is conveniently overlooked. The suffering of ‘raced’ dogs is immeasurable and has only been documented due to the reports of people rescuing these unfortunate animals. Greyhounds have been butchered, drugged, abandoned, vivisected on in our collages, shot and mutilated when their money making days are over. Pits have been uncovered with buried dogs and a slaughterhouse using Bolt-guns to legally kill these dogs was also exposed. read full story / add a comment |
