Where is the UN? Where is Clinton? Where is NATO? Where are the Sanctions? Where are the international conferences in support of the Saudi Shia people? Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy, a dictatorship, but it doesn't bother those who are out destabilise Syria. Actually Saudi Arabia is arming and bankrolling the Syrian fundamentalists.
Two men have been killed in Saudi Arabia during a protest against the arrest of a prominent Shia cleric.
Activists said Akbar al-Shakuri and Mohammed al-Filfil were shot by police while attending a demonstration in Qatif, a city in Eastern Province.
The interior ministry said there had been no clashes with police, and that the incident was being investigated. ... read full story / add a comment

It's obvious that the President's real crimes are that he chose to ally himself more closely with Paraguay's left, which in reality means the working and poor masses of the country, who, like other Latin American countries, choose socialism as their form of political expression. ... read full story / add a comment

Today the AGM of Mayo Co. council was disrupted by a high pitched grinding noise; a recording of the sounds that came from Shell's compound in Aghoose during the June bank holiday weekend. Local residents aimed to demonstrate how they were ignored when they tried to complain about this disturbance which lasted for four days, and were told the council offices were closed on the bank holiday.

RTE has upheld a complaint against Eoghan Harris and Gerry Gregg's short television documentary An Tost Fada ('The Long Silence') on two counts (Sunday Times, 24 June 2012 - see article below and letters back and forth to RTE).
The complaint, RTE’s response and reply to RTE are attached here as separate PDF files - right-click and save them to read.
At least one programme mistake resulted from suppression of information.
Other very serious errors in the programme were not addressed by RTE. I have asked RTE to address them and to make a balancing programme. I have also asked RTE to bring back its abandoned policy of using a historical adviser on such programmes.

The Irish Times reported last week that Israel's Deputy Ambassador to Ireland, Nurit Tinari-Modai, is advocating a campaign of intimidation, smears and falsification against Israeli human rights activists who campaign in solidarity with Palestinians . Nurit Tinari-Modai suggests that a good way of undermining opponents of Zionism is to insinuate that "sexual identity problems" motivates those who protest the treatment oif Palestinians .
“Israel’s Channel 10 News reported that Nurit Tinari Modai, who is cultural officer at the embassy and is married to ambassador Boaz Modai, advised that the foreign ministry should adopt a new strategy in which it would “try to hit [the activists’] soft underbellies .” ... read full story / add a comment

As the leaders of the global diamond industry gathered in Vicenza, Italy for the annual meeting of the World Diamond Council, Palestinians remained trapped in a surreal nightmarish existence under the cosh of a diamond-funded, nuclear-armed belligerent regime: "The Israeli forces used [taser guns] and I have bruises on my arms and legs. I saw them open a protester's mouth by force and spit in it, and they spit in my face as well. While being under custody, a police officer of Ramle district addressed both me and another female activist while being cuffed with verbal sexual harassment, threatening to rape us. Republican Sinn Féin, are calling on people to vote NO in the referendum on the Fiscal Treaty on May 31. The treaty, if passed, will perpetuate austerity for decades to come.
The referendum is an opportunity to send out a clear statement of intent that people are not prepared to cede any more power to the undemocratic and un-elected bureaucratic elite that is the EU. A NO vote will be a positive step towards regaining control of our future and that of the generations to come.
Austerity has been rejected by the French and Greek people and now it is the turn of the citizens of this state to reject them also. ... read full story / add a comment
