On Thursday night RTE Primetime presented what many have described as a 'regime broadcast', an utterly transparent hatchet job of the anti-Water Charges campaign. This featured, supposedly, an anonymous water meter installer describing being accosted by knife, hatchet, baseball bat, and golf club wielding maniacal protesters – the sinister fringe. The core message transmitted in the program was 'you can protest, but don't protest effectively'. If you watched it (link below), what did you think? ... read full story / add a comment
I'm reproducing this post here because I think it needs wider circulation. I hope the original poster will forgive my boldness but It is an important message that should get out to the widest possible audience.
Basically, under instruction from the EU, we will be giving private investors the interest on 28 billion of bank debt instead of paying it back to the Irish central bank as is currently the case, all with barely a murmur from the Irish media. Meanwhile the distraction storm rages on over a piddling 280 million which MIGHT be repaid to junior bond holders some of which MAY actually be local credit unions etc who are very beneficial to our economy.
Furthermore If interest rates rise in the future we WILL be crucified by huge wasted interest repayments to greedy vulture capitalists. Meanwhile the media have us pissing and moaning over a hypothetical 280 million which MIGHT be repaid mainly to the likes of our own credit unions which will be peanuts compared to these other interest payments most likely going to foreign vulture capitalists ... read full story / add a comment

In the face of massive opposition to the water charges, the government have made several clumsy attempts to placate us, while their partners in the media seek to frighten us off the streets. The latest attempt, delivered by Alan Kelly, Minister for the Environment, Community & Local Government in the Dáil on the 19th of November, is the plan to charge us €160 per year for our water and to give ‘eligible households’ a water conservation grant of €100. ... read full story / add a comment

Over 100 separate local demonstrations took place today (Sat Nov 1st) against the Water Charges and for the Right 2 Water. Organisers estimate conservatively that over 150,000 were out on the streets today to send a message to this government that they won't accept paying for water twice and having it privatised later.
People realize that all the false promises and allowances will eventually be dropped and the long term result will be that a privatised water company will prey on the people with massive hikes in charges and big fat bonuses for themselves.
There were protests from Cork & Kerry to Wexford to Dublin to Limerick to Galway to Sligo to Donegal to Cavan to Dundalk and all over the Midlands. There has never been anything like it perhaps since the foundation of the state. The people are truly fed up and are determined and will not be abused by the political technocrats of big Capital that is robbing every social gain our forebears fought hard to get over the past century. ... read full story / add a comment

Sat Nov 1st is going to be a Right2Water National Day of Local Protests from 12am onwards
The Right2Water campaign is helping to coordinate dozens of local demonstrations across Ireland, all due to take place on November 1st.
Following on from one of the largest national demonstrations in Irish history, the Right2Water campaign says it will continue to build a mass movement of opposition to water charges.
The campaign – which involves trade unions, political parties and community groups – believes people are angry and unified in their opposition to these unfair charges.
The campaign is asking all anti-water charges groups – including political parties – to unify and work together to ensure as large a demonstration as possible in their home towns and cities. ... read full story / add a comment

The Judicial Review of the Minister of Justice’s refusal to grant Michael McKevitt enhanced remission was scheduled to commence this morning in Court 4 of the High Court. However, upon arrival at court McKevitt’s legal team was informed that his case was being removed from the immediate hearing list and being placed instead on the Administration List – with a new date yet to be scheduled.
Michael McKevitt’s legal team protested that today’s date had been scheduled by a High Court judge before the summer break; that the case concerned the potential unlawful detention of a prisoner and a citizen’s deprivation of liberty, and that the case should be given priority and should commence as previously scheduled. ... read full story / add a comment

The Irish government is charging for public water as part of its TISA signup. This is just the start, we will all pay for all water if they have their way, even if we don't get any services from Irish Water. Shannonwatch welcomes the visit to Shannon Airport by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions. The visit which took place on October 2nd was a follow-up to a petition by Shannonwatch earlier this year. The petition called for the Government to investigate the use of Shannon Airport and Irish airspace for the transit of US armed troops, munitions and other war material, as well as for the refuelling of CIA-associated aircraft involved in extraordinary rendition.
During their visit to Shannon, representatives of the Committee met with members of the Gardai including Chief Superintendent John Kerin and with airport officials before meeting again with Shannonwatch. They were informed that about 40,000 US troops had gone through Shannon so far this year. However Shannonwatch understands that airport officials said that US troops were not essential to the economics of Shannon Airport as they contribute relatively little, and that civilian passengers contribute far more with shopping, car parking and so on. ... read full story / add a comment

Corruption and incompetence rule in certain corridors of Dublin City Council. Coventa the company which somehow won the tender (despite not being a party to the bidding) and Dublin City Council have pushed the cost up to nearly €100 million for the land. Council Manager Owen Keegan said not one cent of the €96 million that has already been spent will be clawed back if the plan doesn't go ahead. Despite also as extra €36 million in extra costs many Councillors state that this whole thing has nothing to do with mad ideas from Bertie Ahern. Even if it does not go ahead it will still cost €600 million, and obviously this is the best interests of every else abroad who likes to sabotage Irish planning and make a few million doing so. Renewable energy is the future but not for the old school chums of yesteryear. ... read full story / add a comment
