Cllr Joan Collins calls for support for Department of Finance Protest

category dublin | anti-capitalism | event notice author Tuesday November 23, 2010 18:32author by pat c Report this post to the editors

People Before Profit Alliance Candidate for Dublin South Central Cllr Joan Collins released the following statement calling for support in tomorrow’s (Wednesday's) protest outside the Dept of Finance @12.30 on Merrion Square.

It appears that the government is lumbering towards a collapse – whether before the new year or in mid to late January. They should go and go now.

They are squatters in Dail Eireann, they squandered the Celtic tiger, cut taxes for the rich and neglected the health service and education. They have lied and cheated their way to keep their grimy hands on the mercs and perks they cherish so much.

Working class people across the country are dying for the chance to throw them out. We’ve been waiting too long.. We need to tell them that they are a poison at the head of the country. Their plans to appease the IMF and the European Central bank will devastate the incomes of ordinary people across the country and will slash the social supports that are desperately needed when thousands are falling out of work.

We need to show our opposition to the cuts. The demonstration on this Saturday 27th November is an opportunity to show that we will not accept the agenda of slash, burn and privatise. A huge militant demonstration will go a long way to getting this rotten government out. It will also show the other political parties that we do not accept the agenda of the IMF.

People Before Profit is calling a protest outside the Department of Finance on Merrion Square on Wednesday 24th November at 12.30 – the day the government publishes their four year budgetary plan. We cannot let them bring in this savage budget without a fight. They must know that we will fight them at every turn.

Protesters call for general strike

The People Before Profit Alliance has called for a general strike along with a movement of civil disobedience across the country.

Speaking to about 60 protesters outside the Department of Finance today, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown councillor, Richard Boyd Barrett called on people to make their voices heard in the coming weeks.

"We need to stay on the streets until this Government is driven from office, and we want to nail the lie that there is no money in this country. That is a lie that is being used to bully and intimidate people," Mr Barrett said.

"Credible estimates by economists in this country suggest that there are €100 to €120 billion in accumulated wealth, assets, cash, bonds and property assets in the hands of the top 5 per cent of the population of this country. Put even a five percent tax on that money and you get the six billion that they are planning to take off the pensioners and poor of this country."

The protest first gathered outside the Department of Finance at 12.30pm before moving to the Merrion Hotel across the road - as one protester put it "to ruin their (politicians') lunch."

Simultaneously, a separate Sinn Féin protest was being held outside the Department of the Taoiseach. After the People Before Profit Alliance protesters moved to outside the same department, it meant close to 100 protesters were eventually present outside.

The organisers expressed the hope people will come out in their thousands on Saturday for the workers' protest march to the GPO in O'Connell Street and that the Ictu will be convinced to call a general strike.

Actor and satirist Morgan C Jones has called on people to participate in a silent protest outside Leinster House at midday tomorrow carrying placards with the message "you're fired" for the Government.
