Interim Meeting of IMPERO

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Thursday November 26, 2009 20:48author by Sean Crudden - imperoauthor email sean at impero dot iol dot ieauthor address Jenkinstown, Dundalk, Co Louthauthor phone 0879739945 Report this post to the editors

Informal Meeting

An informal meeting of IMPERO will take place in The Terrace Bar, Ballymascanlon House Hotel, Dundalk, Co Louth, on Saturday morning starting at 11.00 hrs.

IMPERO is the Irish Mental Patients' Educational and Representative Organisation founded in 1990 at a public meeting in this same hotel. It holds general meetings in June each year. It has become the custom to hold a less formal get-together before Christmas each year to review progress and performance and to refresh key members of the committee on objectives for the new year and forward. If you wish to attend please let us know in advance.

This morning's meeting took place as planned. Technically it was a public meeting. In practice no-one attended beyond the officers of IMPERO. The meeting kicked off with a reading by the secretary of his indymedia article "Tales of Ballycumber." A discussion ensued which touched on suicide prevention, IMPERO's film project, fund-raising, quality in the mental health services.

A further interim meeting was fixed for Saturday 13 February 2010 at 11.00 in The Terrace Bar, Ballymascanlon House Hotel and Country Club. The general meeting for 2010 was fixed last June for 11.00 in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, Co Louth, on 12 June 2010 and will go ahead as planned.

A few informal photos were taken at the end of the meeting. The quality is not great but I am posting five of the photos with this comment. All of the people in the photos are officers of IMPERO.

The 2010 autumn interim meeting was cancelled because of the collapse and death (from cardiac impairment) of Edna Murray, life-partner of Sorley Largey, proprietor, The Strand, Omeath, Co Louth, a few days before the meeting was due to take place. Go ndeánfaidh Dia trócaire ar a hanam dílis Éireannach.

An interim meeting of IMPERO took place in The Strand, Omeath, Co. Louth, Ireland, on Saturday 19 February 2011. The meeting commenced at 14.15 after a communal meal of Irish stew, tea, apple crumble and ice-cream. The meeting concluded at 15.45.

Present were; Seán Crudden, secretary; Anne Muldowney, chairperson; Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes, vice-chairperson; Joan Hardy, mentor; Kevin McGeough, joint-treasurer; Kevin Hynes, Dermot Mooney.

An apology was received from Bishop Tom Daly FRSA, president, who promised to send a donation as he had done last summer.

The chairperson called for a minutes silence in memory of Edna Murray and recited a short prayer in Irish for Edna at the end of the minute.

The secretary read the minutes of the general meeting held last June as well as the agenda for the interim meeting in November which had been cancelled due to the collapse and death of Edna Murray. To bring those present up-to-date.

Kevin McGeough and Seán promised to follow up the idea of an exploratory meeting with Paddy Drumgoole in Louth County Council.

Seán read dramatically three articles he had published recently on indymedia.ie. Break-through!; Let It Snow!; How Much Is the Doggie in The Manger?

Dermot called for a mission statement. Is it a question of, “Don’t want this; don’t want that?” What is the answer he asked?

The Archbishop pointed out that he was currently attending a short course on suicide prevention run by the HSE.

It was agreed to put IMPERO’s name forward to sponsorship.ie but not to register as a charity.
Correspondence with the FRA (Fundamental Rights Agency) was discussed. Seán had raised the matter of the physical condition of mental patients with them and also the issue of training and personal development particularly for young patients and for those expected to live “in the community.”
Seán reported on the recent event co-hosted by Amnesty Ireland/First Fortnight which he had attended in The Button Factory. It formed part of an on-going campaign by Amnesty against stigma and discrimination of the mentally ill.

A discussion took place on a motion Seán had submitted to County Louth Community and Voluntary Forum:-

“That in view of inappropriate alterations beginning in the 1960’s the forum agrees that Ardee Mental Hospital should be listed as a building to be renovated and preserved in authentic style for the information and instruction of future generations and for possible future social, educational, medical, recreational use.”

Archbishop Hynes reported on North Louth Joint Policing Committee. He is a community representative nominated by IMPERO and elected onto the committee. The ensuing discussion was complimentary neither to the committee nor to the police. Credibility of committee members; corruption; people do not know their neighbours; better relations; inequalities in the way police deal with the public; gombeen syndrome; harassment; political pull: these were some of the tips of the icebergs discussed.

The secretary pointed out that the next meeting would be the general meeting scheduled for 110611.

I am adding a few photos from Saturday's meeting which I had not time to upload when I was publishing the report on Monday.

Joan Hardy was has operated as mentor to IMPERO for the past 3 years under a mentoring scheme organised by Louth County Council in conjunction with Drogheda Partnership. Incidentally since then Drogheda Partnership and Dundalk Partnership have been merged with Louth LEADER to form a new overarching agency called Louth LEADER/Partnership. The person not already identified in the group photo is Kevin Hynes seen standing on the left of the picture as you look at it.

As you can see from some of the photos I uploaded on Monday the season seems to have changed perceptibly here. And today is even better - a real pet day!

Saturday's meeting took placed as planned.  It was swift and fluent, a side-effect of the small attendance.  Obviously it would be preferable if the attendance were bigger event if that slowed things down.  The policy of IMPERO is to notify all its meetings publicly through indymedia.ie and, in case this is not already clear, we are prepared to make provision for anyone interested to attend.  Details of the business conducted at the meeting can be sourced at the link below.

Saturday's Autumn interim meeting of IMPERO was fluent and informative. Details may be read on IMPERO's website given in the link below. One important caveat arising out of discussions in the meeting was that any new or amended legislation in the field of mental health should not serve to create, perpetuate, underpin: stigma.

IMPERO chose a new venue for this year's (2015) Autumn interim meeting, Brian Muldoon's Restaurant, Ardee. The meeting room was comfortable and very adequate, plush almost. The meeting was well attended as IMPERO meetings go. The business of the meeting was interesting and the debate was stimulating. One get the impression that things are beginning to happen worldwide as well as where mental health provision is concerned here in Ireland. The 17 SDG's (sustainable development goals) launched on September 25 by the UN in New York represent a present essential in the future of the planet. If the most is not made of this departure it may be too late to try to shape the future properly the next time this is attempted. So ìmpero wishes the post 2015 sustainable development agenda and all involved success and good fortune. And mental patients do not want to be left behind. For a minute of the interim meeting take a look at IMPERO's web-site through the link below.

The Autumn interim meeting of IMPERO took place in the meeting room of Our Lady of The Wayside Church, Jenkinstown, starting at 15:00 on Saturday 29 October 2016.

Present: Leonard Hatrick, president; Margaret Hatrick; Kevin McGeough; Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes OMD PhD, chairperson; Sean Crudden, secretary.

An apology was received from Anne Muldowney.

Those present recited a prayer from a small script, for the recovery of Fr. Pádraig Murphy, parish priest of Lordship and Ballymascanlon, who has suffered a serious illness and for healing for all. Fr. Murphy is the pastor of Our Lady of The Wayside Church.

The Archbishop recited a short extempore prayer for the success of the meeting through the guidance of the spirit in the hope that something interesting gets done.

The chairperson read the minutes of the General Assembly held in June.

The secretary read the minutes of the Spring interim meeting held in February, the last ordinary meeting. These minutes were unanimously adopted on the proposal of the president seconded by the chairperson.

The recently opened new facility in The Lourdes was discussed at some length. No one fully understood the strategy of the HSE in forsaking Ardee Mental Hospital which is still a serviceable building on a lovely site. Some misgivings were expressed about the possible absence of a community aspect within the new facility. Others thought patients might appreciate the privacy afforded by en-suite single rooms.

Leonard will attend on behalf of IMPERO the ENUSP seminar in Berlin on 13, 14, 15 November 2016. The Archbishop led the meeting in an extempore prayer for Leonard that he will have the strength to accomplish the journey and that he will make friends and enjoy himself.

Leonard is to investigate with his vestry the possibility of holding the Spring interim meeting in February in St. Mary’s Church of Ireland, Ardee.

The meeting complimented Leonard who has recently been appointed commissioner for oaths in The High Court.

Saturday's meeting was a complete success. We covered most of the points on the agenda. However the general outlook was glum. There was a general feeling that everything is not right. Patients, young and old, are facing a future replete with difficulty and disappointment. And it appears that no-one in a position to do anything about it will trouble themselves to do so. Further details and photos available through the link below. Please make a note of the venue for IMPERO General Assembly in June and make arrangements to attend it you are interested.

Dear Friend

I hope these few lines find you well. It is to let you know that the Autumn Interim Meeting of IMPERO for 2017 will take place in Our Lady of The Wayside Church, Jenkinstown, Dundalk, Co. Louth, Ireland, on Saturday 28 October 2017 starting at 14:00. I am not sending a pre-cooked agenda. We can agree something when we meet. These are routine meetings but they serve to keep track of developments or happenings in the world of mental health care. For example it would help if you could read up something on the recent WPA (World Psychiatric Association) congress held in Berlin. I mention developments. Pardon me for saying so but it appears to me to be development but no development. Really I think the principal players do not see the need for change and, in my opinion, it is a crying need. Of course we will discuss happenings nearer to home.

Anyway best wishes to all and I hope you can attend and that our meeting will be an enjoyable one.

Yours sincerely

Dear People

In the first place I must apologise for delay in sending out this notice. I stayed on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday; in Dunboyne Castle Hotel and Spa, at a reunion of the class of 1961 in St. Patrick’s College Maynooth, the national Roman Catholic Seminary. There was a slap-up dinner in the College on Monday night to which all the class members and their partners were invited. The dinner was to celebrate the golden jubilee of the ordination of those members of the class, who went the full distance, in 1968. A total of about 45 people attended the dinner including about 4 women. At mass on Monday morning celebrated by Fr. Dennis Cashman in the hotel I asked for prayers for mental patients and the mentally ill. “Lord, hear us,” I concluded. “”Lord, graciously hear us,” those assembled answered promptly and with gusto. Anyway I am late with the notice but I hope no-one will accuse me of being dilatory.

By kind permission of Lordship and Ravensdale Parish this year’s annual assembly of IMPERO will take place in the meeting room of Our Lady of The Wayside Church, Jenkinstown, Dundalk, Co. Louth, starting at 14:00 on Saturday 16 June 2018.

Agenda

1. Read and adopt minutes of last year’s General Assembly
2. Matters arising
3. The draft additional protocol to the Oviedo Convention
4. Reading by Sean Crudden of his article, “Outcaste!”
5. “Where Will the Madness End?” Discussion
6. Finances
7. Strategy
8. Fix dates and venues for interim meetings and for General Assembly 2019

Unlike last year there will be no food or drink provided at the General Assembly. Naturally you may bring a snack with you if you are travelling a distance. Even if you cannot attend the meeting I hope you are able to give these matters some thought. Correspondence is more than welcome.

Every good wish

Yours sincerely
