Former Limavady borough councillor Mickey McGonigle from Dungiven has hit out at the selection of Constable Billy Leonard in East Derry as the replacement for Francie Brolly in Stormont. The Ulster provincial Treasurer for Republican Sinn Féin and Chair of the John Mitchel Cumann said:

“It is fitting perhaps that those who continually call for collaboration with the British Crown Forces have selected an RUC man to represent them in the colonial assembly in Stormont.

“However it is a grave insult to the Republican people for these people to claim that they represent in any way the ideals of an Ireland free from foreign rule. The Provos should have the decency to admit that it is they who have adopted Constable Leonard's position, and not he who has adopted theirs.

“True Republicans reject the British Crown Forces and the party which welcomes them into their ranks,” said Mr. McGonigle.

"True Republicans reject the British Crown Forces and the party which welcomes them into their ranks"

The owerwhelming majority of republicans in Northern Ireland vote for Sinn Fein and the SDLP support the peace process and support the PSNI which is now a cross community police force with Catholic and Protestant officers.

Who are these so-called "true" republicans? Micro-groups of terrorist gunmen and bombers with no democratic mandade whatsoever who are actively trying to murder police officers?

"Who are these so-called "true" republicans? "
Yesterday's men and women who let their ignorance and bigotry stop them from moving into the future with the rest of the Irish people.

They expect forgiveness for the wrongs they have done on others (it was the war apparently) but won't budge an inch when it comes to forgetting the past sins of the "other side". Indeed they feel the need to blame people who had absolutely nothing to do with committing those sins.

Lost in their own little idea of the perfect Ireland, they have neither the foresight or the intelligence to see that the only way forward is to compromise and play the long game. Instead they delude themselves that they can murder and maim and that the Irish people will see them as some sort of heroes in the end, they accuse all who do not purport to this fantasy as "British imperialist sympathisers" and such oul blather.

They all the millstones around Ireland’s neck – the sooner they are sunk the better for us all.

True republican - when in this country did a democratic mandate stand in the way of a small rebellion. No republican,in my opinion, can support a partitioned Ireland, a British police force or a British controlled government in Ireland. Support all this, then drop the republican tag and acknowledge a new political status. I do not support a return to war but I would encourage a return to real republican values and principles.

The good Councillor does not seem to understand that, in the new dispensation, Republican views are not the only ones on the table. Nor should they be. This is very regressive stuff. I'm not sure I know what the word 'republican' is supposed to mean any more, when a grotesque party such as Fianna Fáil can call themselves the Republican Party while robbing the country blind.

"No republican,in my opinion, can support a partitioned Ireland, a British police force or a British controlled government in Ireland."

Every political party in the Dail and the vast majority of electorate in 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland want British rule to come to an end in the North and for the island to unified under a 32-country government and believe it is in the long term best interests of the island.

A real republican is a democrat and respects the will of majority and currently the majority of the citizens of Northern Ireland want to remain in the UK.

That is going to remain that way until such time as the people of Northern Ireland want it.

The Protestant Unionist community can only be persuaded to change their minds and join a 32-county Republic of Ireland by peaceful means.

Decades of violence achieved absolutely nothing and indeed has prolonged the partition of the island.

Dissident republicans are quite happy to ignore the democratic will of the people of the whole island who are in favour of a democratic peace process. True republicans hope that eventually this process will lead to Irish unity.

A true republican believe in a society where the people are sovereign.

The dissidents have contempt for the sovereignty of the people.

That's why Martin McGuinness quite rightly called these idiots what they are - traitors to the people of Ireland.

These people who call themselves republicans don't even know the meaning of the word! As far as I know Billy Leonard's only 'crime' is to be from a protestant background and he is a former police constable. He's now a member of SF (one of very few non RC there I'd say!) and I assume supports their agenda of a united Ireland.

Basically RSF (and the other splinter sectarian groups) don't like the idea of a protestant about the place, hence the ethnic cleansing campaign against border protestants over the years. This sectarian, bigoted nationalism has very little to do with true republicanism of the American or French revolutions, and is merely code for a narrow catholic sectarianism.

They have a go at the Unionists who complain about ex Republican terrorists in the government, branding them bigots and anti-catholic. Then when an ex peeler get into the public eye they start ranting and raving.
Bunch of hypocrites.
Why don't you and your Unionist alter egos just bugger off to a wee island somewhere so you can hold your hate-fests away from decent people.
