HIGHLIGHTS THIS MONTH/////////////////

return to the wild
independent media//
Return To The Wild’ takes a fair and open-minded look at the re-introduction of the gray wolf to the Northern Rockies, the friction it has caused, and the passionate debate it has stirred. The goal of the documentary is to address the issue of how man and predator can co-exist, in the hope of finding a balanced solution that addresses the needs of the ranchers, wildlife supporters, hunters, and most importantly, the wolves themselves.

independent media//
The feature-length documentary follows the first year of a small collective in Buenos Aires as it struggles amidst assassinations, a collapsing economy, and a whirlwind of political upheaval. “i”is being distributed using an experimental, decentralized network-building method that mirrors the grassroots media-making the film is about.

the history of community media
fresh//
Community radio is a very different sector from other areas in the media landscape. A community radio approach aims to embed skills in a community, empowering voices and opening up spheres for debate. This new documentary explore the emergence of the community radio movement here, in all it's diversity.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO IN DCTV///////

- We’ve started working on Crew TV which is a summer long project that aims to train young people in studio production, by the end of the training sessions we’ll have a series of studio style pieces made with the kids, including satirical current affair’s shows with the flair of Dublin teens and god knows what else once they learn how to churn out the tape in the studio.

- The Sound is our new monthly current affairs show, and it’s ran entirely by volunteers. This month saw different producers take control of individual segments. The Sound is produced by the current affairs working group within DCTV, so if you are interested in getting involved with this soon to be illustrious list of commentators on a mission to bring no-budget, shooting from the hip opinion to Dublin’s screens then get in touch.

- Community in the Studio is heading into full steam, you can already see a selection of the programming that is made on BCI supported scheme that is embedding media skills with a number of different community groups in Dublin. These range from a labour history group, an anarchist feminist organisation, an Irish language group and the ethnic minority forum. We should have this whole scheme wrapped up by the end of July and all the programmes are getting an airing as part of our Fresh slot that runs at 1200 and 1900pm each day.

- Our festivals of community TV groups have been meeting throughout the month. We are currently organizing a discussion show to give some context to our forthcoming season of content on Latin America which will feature documentaries like Five Factories, Venezuela from Below, Argentina: Hope In Hard Times and about eight hours more of the best documentaries from the movements. In the first week of June we will be having an open meeting to start organizing a show to look at issues of housing and homelessness in Dublin as well as developing a promotional strategy for a documentary season on the theme. Our Drugs and the Community group are already in the early stages of assembling ideas for their own discussion show while we hunt down content from community groups and the creative commons networks that reflects this theme.

- In the latest round of BCI grants, the station has secured funding for several projects including one from the station innovation fund that we will use to stream line our mechanism of creating a contacts database for the station. We’ll also be doing an evaluation of our outreach programmes, and best of all, we’ll be making a new programme dedicated to the sub cultures, politics and lifestyles of Dublin’s cycling community, including carrying out something of a public enquiry to find out the good and the bad of cycling in Dublin .

- We recently entered into some preliminary discussion with the city council on a number of projects relating to Innovation Dublin, there’s not much to say on it yet, but stay tuned.

- For a TV station we’ve a desperate lack of promotional shots, but we are aiming to put that right and with our new Flickr stream you’ll be able to see behind the scenes shots from our workings over here.
