A concrete plant, a telemast. a sludge plant, an incinerator, a quarry and a disused dump

Clare County Council has turned down an application for retention of a dry concrete batching plant near Clonlara, Co. Clare, after strong objections to the proposal were lodged by the Gillogue Residents’ Association. (Clare Champion 8/5/09, p. 10).

Laois County Council rejected a proposal by Hutchinson 3G to erect a 36-metre telemast near St. John’s Church, Coolbanagher, Co. Laois, last week after objections from local residents and the Church of Ireland rector of the Mountmellick Group of Parishes. (Leinster Express 6/5/09, p. 3).

Ballinasloe Town Council has turned down an application by OneBio Ltd. to build a sludge plant adjacent to Premier Proteins’ rendering plant on the banks of the river Suck. The Ballinasloe Environmental Alliance, founded in 2007 to campaign on pollution issues related to the Premier Proteins plant, warned at a public meeting last week that the developers are likely to appeal the decision to An Bord Pleanala. (Connacht Tribune 8/5/09, p. 10).

Indaver Ireland, the company behind the waste incinerator at Carranstown, Duleek, Co. Meath is seeking a review of its waste licence from the EPA to allow for increased capacity at the plant. Local election candidate Paul O’Brien, associated with the No Incineration Alliance for over ten years, called for a fully staffed EPA office in the area to monitor and regulate the Indaver operation. (Meath Chronicle 7/5/09, p. 3).

Meath County Council last week refused Kilsaran Concrete Ltd. permission for a 20 years extension to quarrying at Tullykane, Kilmessan, Co. Meath, to which more than 80 local people had lodged objections. (Meath Weekender 9/5/09, p. 6).

Bord na Mona plans to excavate some 25,000 tonnes of waste from a controversial disused dump site at Ballymorris, Co. Laois, that it bought two years ago, with the work expected to start later this month. (Laois Nationalist 8/5/09, p. 1).
