press release
Monday May 04, 2009 13:41 by Joe Higgins.eu - Socialist Party info at joehiggins dot eu
Website, Blog, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Bebo, Myspace
Former Socialist Party TD, and well known fighter for working people Joe Higgins has launched his online campaign for the 2009 European Elections. Currently this includes a campaign website and blog at Joe Higgins.eu and a Facebook page. Active profiles on have also been set up on YouTube , Twitter , Flickr , Bebo , Myspace and will go live in the next days.
Joe is standing in the Dublin Constituency for the Socialist Party “to give ordinary people all across Dublin the opportunity to strike a blow against the government’s attempt to make us pay for the crisis caused by them and their friends in the banks and property”.
Joe Higgins, a fighter for working people “The victims of the crisis in Dublin – ordinary working men and women and those losing their jobs – should pay back Fianna Fail for the disastrous consequences of handing the economy over to speculators and profiteering chancers. On June 5th they should wipe out Fianna Fail in the polling booths and wipe their feet on the Green Party which has made itself a doormat for the party of the speculators.”
Joe Higgins and the Socialist Party plan to make the internet a key plank in their election campaign. Coordinator of Joe Higgins.eu, Cian Prendiville, said “We want to make Joe Higgins.eu a one-stop-shop for all those who want to find out about Joe, his ideas, his stance on current issues and upcoming campaign events. But we want it to be more than that. The site is also aimed at those who already support Joe, providing them with ways to donate, volunteer and help his campaign. Through Facebook and other social media we also want to engage with people and hear their thoughts.”
Videos of Joe’s activities, speeches and a video blog will all be available through YouTube, photos from the campaign will also be on Flickr, and there will be daily updates on Joe’s activities through Twitter. Articles will also be written for Indymedia. As well as informing people, the campaign also aims to make it easier for people to help out. There will be announcements to let people know of opportunities to help out, with updates on what activities will be going on. All in all it will see Joe Higgins having one of the biggest internet profiles of any of the candidates in the upcoming elections.
The web campaign will be based completely on work done by volunteers. Joe Higgins says that “we have had a good response so far, with people volunteering to help out with doing videos, photos and helping set up the sites. But we’d also like to appeal to others out there who are supportive of our campaign to get in touch to help out however they can. Obviously we want people to help out with our offline campaign as well, to donate or to take leaflets to distribute in their communities. So I’d appeal to all those who support our campaign, to get involved today.”
