Fascist police used gas bombs and water canon

Fascist Turkish police used water canon and gas bombs to stop workers from accessing the central district of Taksim, Istanbul. Taksim has been the center and symbol of workers' strugle since "unknown snipers" opened indiscriminate fire on protesting workers and killed 34 in 1977.

Workers buses, which were on their way to the celebrations from the nearby city of Izmit, were stopped and workers were attacked by the police when they diverted their protest and remained in the city.

May Day clashes in Istanbul - Friday, 1 May 2009 10:16

Several hundred May Day demonstrators have clashed with police in central Istanbul in battles that saw water cannon fired and several arrests made. Turkish riot police staged three charges against hundreds of demonstrators in the Sisli district of the city who had hurled rocks at security forces, according to eyewitnesses at the scene.
