Shell to Sea supporters occupy Shell office in Belmullet in Support of Maura Harrington

category mayo | environment | news report author Monday March 16, 2009 21:02author by harry Report this post to the editors

Monday, 16th March 2009, seven members of the Rossport Solidarity Camp occupied the Shell office in Belmullet, County Mayo, for over an hour, in support of Maura Harrington. Maura has now been in jail for six days of her thirty day sentence.

The camp members of the camp entered the office and held up a banner reading “Free Maura”. Shell’s Communication officer Christy Loftus came into the lobby and fielded questions from the group for the entire period. Some people made it into the main part of the building; during this time the fire alarms went off in the building. Gardaí were called to the office, came inside and asked the group to leave. The group remained in the building for another 45 minutes questioning Christy Loftus and then left later of their own accord. No one was arrested.
Also this morning, the Shell to Sea trailer was opened at Bellanaboy refinery site.
Shell to Sea campaigner Pat O’Donnell awoke this morning to find that the windows on his boat had been broken. It is not clear whether the vandalism is related to the campaign against Shell, but it was clearly targeted at O’Donnell’s boat, which was the only one damaged out of a boat yard of over 20 boats. This is the second time his boat has been targeted in the past two years.

A very articulate, educated and a mother stands up to the destruction that is and about to fall on the people of Erris, A destruction that will forever be seen for the generations that will follow us. WHY ?
Faceless shell share holders say so, we want more profit and we don't care what has to be done as long as the shares go up. They went up 2 cents a share= is that all that ERRIS is worth 2 cents.
Maura stood for the people of Erris an loss her freedom for 28 days, what else will we lose !
Our Constitution an the laws; I always thought that it was against the law to purjured oneself in court, never mind our rights to a fair trial; any way Happy Mothers Day an SEA U SOON !! We'll Stand again.

A statement from M. M. Mc Carron on a recent unwanted encounter with 3 Shell staff
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

MARCH 2009

I would like to express my irritation at being approached twice during a recent Conference by Shell representatives who insisted on introducing themselves and almost compelling me to first have coffee and then lunch in their company at All Hallows College. On the second attempt I felt I was deliberately being identified by one for the benefit of the other two whom I had never seen or heard of before. I had never spoken or been introduced to the first person either. I was suddenly confronted by three strangers, only one of which I recognised. Other participants were taken aback.

This was a membership conference for representatives of religious institutes and Churches who are subscribers to the Ethical Committee for Corporate Responsibility. Members attending the Conference were pre-registered and a list was immediately available. It was apparent that the Shell representatives had not pre-registered and were not listed either by name or company. The agenda addressed investment guidelines of an ethical nature.

Other than interpreting it as a form of harassment I could give no explanation for the approaches of proffered handshakes and invitations. I do not speak to such representatives since Shell took me to task by bringing a formal accusation of lying during a Channel 4 programme to the BBC Complaints Commission in the Nineties. I had to swear an affadavit on the matter which Shell later withdrew.

M.M. Mc Carron.

(M.M. McCarron gave me a copy of this statement at a meeting on Friday at the Clarence Hotel, Dublin. It is posted here with her express permission.)

John Sauven, the executive director of Greenpeace UK, said that Shell had “rejoined the ranks of the dirtiest, most regressive corporations in the world ... After years of proclaiming their commitment to clean power, they're now pulling out of the technologies we need to see scaled up if we're to slash emissions.”
