Swedish protest Israeli tennis competition in Malmo Sweden

category international | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Sunday March 08, 2009 11:16author by James Report this post to the editors

Over 10 000 protest against Israeli participation in the Davis cup being hosted in Malmo Sweden

On Saturday (07.03.09) over 10 000 protesters gathered to protest the Israeli Sweden tennis match as part of the Davis cup tournament. Many feel that a boicott of Israel is the only way to get the military state to cease its brutal occupation of the remnants of Palestine.
Over 1000 police were present to prevent protesters entering the stadium. According to local reports the police used heavy handed tactics to try to disperse the largely peaceful protest, which then led to stone throwing from a small amount of protesters. At one point a policeman drew his service revolver but was dissuaded from using it by a fellow officer.
As for the match, not sure who ’won’, but allowing Israel to feel part of a civilised community means really that nobody won here, but at least the boicott movement resulted in a largely deserted stadium during the fixture.
Such boicotts must continue if the Israelis are to get the message loud and clear that ordinary people the world over are sick of their murderous methods in dealing with their brutal occupation of Palestine.

This is just an attempt to stoke up more anti-Jewish hatred by a typical alliance of far-left elements and Islamic fundamentalists in Sweden, congratulations to the Swedish police for showing some backbone in dealing with hate protests rather than their usual 'softly-softly' approach. Many Swedish Jews are living in fear of anti-Semitic attacks (as are Jews throughout Europe) at present.

Great to hear that 10,000 managed to demonstrate in Malmo about this, since I can't imagine Malmo to be such a huge place. Needless to say, the demo wasn't anti-Jewish but anti-apartheid and pro-justice in Israel/Palestine, and I'd be surprised if there weren't a Jewish contingent there, as at similar demos across Europe. To characterise European Jews as living in mortal terror at antisemitism is so far off the mark that it makes one wonder which planet, never mind which continent the previous commentator lives on.

I was very pleased to read of the protest and large turn-out of protesters. I agree it is time that we in Europe stop having 'normal' relations with Israel until it behaves 'normally' with its neighbours and ceases to oppress the occupied refugees of Gaza and Palestine and racially discriminate against its own Arab minority. To carry on as 'normal' after the Israeli war crimes and human right abuses of January would be a deriliction of moral duty. The first comment appeals to fear-mongering and attempts to perpretrate a false victim mentality which won't help the situation and further promotes prejudice.
Well done Malmö. I salute you.

David L asked :

" To characterise European Jews as living in mortal terror at antisemitism is so far off the mark that it makes one wonder which planet, never mind which continent the previous commentator lives on. "

The answer to your question is Planet Zion or as it has come to be known with a deep sense of trepidation among it's neighbours, Israel. Since it's inception Israel has had a dual strategy of constant violent provocation of all neighbours in order to foment continuous war on it's borders and similtaneoulsy to instill fear in Jewish communities around the world in order to maintian a constant sense of fear.
The product is a propaganda picture which can be brandished to give the appearance that Israel is at war because its the Jewish State or interchangably that the Jews are in danger beacause of the war against the Jewish State. Either way the strategy relies on convincing the world that Israel is not a violent colonialist entity but rather represents the outlook of a fearful Jewish people. If it works on Non-Jewish people then it encourages Anti-semitism which is helpful for Israel, when it works on Jews it encourages Aliyah, which is also helpful for Israel.

It is a continuous theme in Israeli newspapers , the most shameless example appearing only a few days ago in Ynet News.: " Can Jews live in Europe? "

" A Jew can no longer walk the streets while displaying Jewish trademarks, or visit Jewish institutions that are not surrounded by police officers and guards; they must remain behind locks and bars, scared for their lives. ............Leave the continent that fondly recalls its anti-Semitism; we in Israel need you. The addition of hundreds of thousands of wealthy Jews will boost Israel, end the illusions of any Israeli Arabs who dream about a demographic victory, and make Israel's economic supremacy absolute. You, who will be arriving in Israel now, will turn it not into one of the world's 20 wealthiest countries - this has already been achieved – but rather, one of the 10 richest countries on the globe. "

Thanks for that article, Sarah. I thought it was at the outer limits of insanity, but that was before I read the comments underneath it.

The level of destructive self-delusion among Israeli and US Jewish Zionists seem to have reached an all-time high. Never mind the vile anti-Muslim racism expressed in the article, it's grimly ironic that in trying to attract Jewish immigration, the author unthinkingly repeat antisemitic cliches about rich diaspora Jews.

The zionist in the US lobby is alive and well and tolerates no dissent, even from the president!

Chas Freeman, a former US ambassador to Saudi Arabia, withdrew before starting work as chairman of the national intelligence council, accusing his critics of libel, character assassination and "utter disregard for the truth".

The "Israel Lobby", he argued, was stifling any discussion of US policy options in the Middle East except those endorsed by "the ruling faction in Israeli politics" - a situation that could "ultimately threaten the existence of the state of Israel".

Freeman's job would have involved producing National Intelligence Estimates, the authoritative documents intended to provide the president and senior policymakers with an overview of crucial security issues.

But numerous members of Congress have questioned Freeman's ability to carry out the task objectively, citing his view that until "Israeli violence against Palestinians" is halted, "it is utterly unrealistic to expect that Palestinians will stand down from violent resistance". They also questioned his business links with Saudi Arabia and his views on China.

"His statements against Israel were way over the top and severely out of step with the administration," said the New York Democratic senator, Chuck Schumer. "I repeatedly urged the White House to reject him, and I am glad they did the right thing."

Unlike the string of prominent Obama nominees who have withdrawn in recent weeks, Freeman did not have to be approved by Congress. But his departure - coming hours after the national intelligence director, Dennis Blair, defended him before a Senate committee - will embarrass the White House, and signals how reluctant the president may be to depart from Washington's current policies towards Israel and the Palestinians.

Noam Chomsky responds to the work of John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt and argues against the idea that a lobby of pro-Israel interests effectively controls US foreign policy.

Their book The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy claims that the lobby leads the US into acting against its national interest, and that the Iraq war was a result of the lobby's influence.

The fact that such a lobby exists is not what is being doubted by Chomsky.
How much power it has to influence the US to carry out policies that are not in the interest of the US is the question he poses.
The fact that Obama and the US, if they try to adopt even a remotely neutral stance (their own insatiable thirst for oil aside, of course) on ME issues, are still curtailed by a barking mob of pro-Israel zealots is not a matter for debate.

Expect no change for the Palestinians under Obama.

Somebody here wrote that "they woudn't be suprised if there was a jewish contigent" at the march, like in other countries in Europe.
I'm not quite sure what the writer is getting at here, but I think they misunderstand the situation in Sweden.

The leader of the leader of the social democrats in Sweden recently took part in a demonstation where Hizbola and Hamas flags were flying. Can you imagine the international outcry if the leader of social democratic parties in Italy, Germany or France did the same thing? Or Gordon Brown in the UK?

Can you imagine how Swedish jews feel?

This lack of understanding from the historicaly most powerful party in sweden ( even though they are not in power at the moment) is extreamly worrying - even to "the jewish contigent" who are critical of israel's action in Gaza
