Hundreds take to the streets to show solidarity and mourn for the people of Gaza

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Sunday December 28, 2008 20:16author by Paula Geraghtyauthor email mspgeraghty at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

Trade Unionists, Palestinians and countless others turned out to express their anger at the recent bombings and killings in Gaza.

Hundreds turned out at the GPO, Dublin, for a protest called at short notice to show solidarity with and mourn the loss of life in Gaza after the recent Israeli military assault.

Jack o'Connor of Siptu spoke as did Mary Lou MacDonald MEP for Sinn Féin, Richard Boyd Barret (Irish Anti War Movement) along with many more. Many Palestinians gathered were mourning the loss of family members in Gaza. One woman I spoke with told of five family members having been killed yesterday. She couldn't say anything else. There was a sense of anger and outrage mixed with a painful powerlessness as Palestinians could only watch the destruction of their homes, community and society thousands of miles away.

A protest for tomorrow evening at five pm outside the Israeli Embassy was announced.

Poignantly, the protest ended on a quiet series of prayers with all joining in.
