Protest at Dail to maintain universal Medical Card for over 70's

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Wednesday October 22, 2008 23:31author by Paula Geraghtyauthor email mspgeraghty at yahoo dot ieauthor phone 0876101340 Report this post to the editors

Over 15,000 took part in today's historic march of predominantly pensioners outside the Dail to keep the universal Medical Card for the over 70's.
Because of their action, solidarity, resiliance, anger and refusal to give in everything will be much different in Ireland. Photoessay from this protest below.

A brilliant showing - the dirty bleeders won't get away with this robbery!

They should have known that you can't pull it off like that.
The elderly are more likely to vote than the twenty somethings...

and to just simply take the medical cards from them and not expect them to turn up in large numbers at the Dail?

Hello, FF over-paid 'brains of government' the over 70's are retired and have free travel... of course they can mobilise.

See, if you had any grasp of tactics you would have revoked their bus passes first and then take away the medical cards, like the heartless scum that you are. Actually, maybe it's the TD's who don't need medical cover (even if some are prone to drink driving or falling down the stairs)

I mean, the TDs have shown themselves to be heartless, brainless and spineless, and their @$$holes are interchangeable with their heads, and their necks are solid brass... that's why they don't worry about the healthcare system.

So, Cowen and Co, who let the nation build up an economic boom overly dependent on a single industry, and did nothing to prepare for the bad times, who allowed the banks to lend 100% mortgages to people desparate to get a house from your developer buddies, while the overpaid financial regulator sat on his hands, you are gonna feel the wrath of it.

Well done on the photo story Paula.
Pity Tara didn't get the same sort of turn out from the people of Ireland and millions of euros would have been saved apart from the obvious damage that would have been avoided. But it is easier to get people to march on an issue that affects them directly and even four years ago we were in different times.
While I admire the pensioners for marching, every one of them I heard interviewed said that they had voted FF all their lives, that means that through the tribunals, the corruption, the bad government they continued to vote for the party that did not have their interests at heart.
Will they change their vote as they said? Unlikely. More likely that they will not vote at all, more's the pity. FF voters admit over and over that they cannot bring themselves to vote for anyone else. Nothing will change unless voters actually change their vote. Not voting is abdicating responsibility.
Will the students vote? Who will they vote for? Again, no point in protesting if potential voters do not make the choice to change the government and we need a change a government.
Before the last election, Bertie was telling us that we should vote FF because the country needed "experienced" politicians and that the opposition had no experience. Now we have a Taoiseach, a Tánaiste and a Minister for Finance who are completely inexperienced and they are showing this every day, particularly the Tánaiste who has shown herself to be a total disaster on a number of occasions and issues.
Personally, I'd rather to see the opposition - they DO have the experience of dealing with difficult times. The three FFers do not.
