RIR to march in Belfast

éirígí will be actively opposing the British army's Royal Irish Regiment parade through Belfast.

The British army's Royal Irish Regiment is planning to parade through the streets of Belfast city centre on November 2. éirígí will be actively opposing this blatant attempt to normalise the occupation of the Six Counties and justify the war against the Afghan people. As many people as possible should take to the streets of Belfast on November 2 to show their opposition to Britain's presence in Ireland and its military aggression around the world.
Buses will be leaving from several cities and towns across Ireland. Log on to www.eirigi.org regularly for more information.

a minor historical incident which has been in the papers the odd time over the past thirty years....called the troubles. The incidents which have raised a few eye brows now and again - Enniskillen, H blocks, Shankill butchers etc are based around issues relating to Britain's occupation of six counties in Ireland Britain occupies part of Ireland hence they have an Irish regiment.

This protest is an illegal assembly. At least that is the opinion of Sir Reg Empey,Ian Paisley Jnr and the Parades Commission.Unionists are urging the PSNI deal with and investigate protesters.

Lets give them a good turn out so as to give PSNI Investigaters something to do,the practice might help them resolve the many cases of RUC/UDR/UVF collusion that ended in the many murders of innocent Nationalists.See you all there....

It appears that the Brits are starting to re-think their little parade through Belfast. The Parades Commission have directed that the RIR / Brit Navy / Air Force parade now start one hour earlier than was originally planned - presumably in an attempt to wrong-foot the eirigi protest.

This comes only a day after it was announced that fighter planes and helicopter gunships are going to do a fly-over of Belfast as part of the protest. Talk about provocation!

Chris,

You say that eirigi's protest is a nonsense and that they should call it off. Does that mean that the sinn fein protest is a nonsense and that they too should call theirs off?

Why is it that Sinn Fein only called their protest a full three weeks after the vote to allow the RIR march through Belfast was taken and a full three weeks after eirigi announced its intention to organise a protest?

Why have Sinn Fein gone cap in hand to the parades commission asking for permission to protest against the British army? Have the Irish people not got an inherent right to organise

Re your comments on eirigi going no place in Sligo. I heard the same from many sinn feiners in Dublin a couple of years back. They''re not saying it now - you might want to get some advise from the few sinn feiners that are left in Dublin.

Omid should know that the others on this thread are very marginal figures on the extremes of anti British politics and don't represent anybody.

Malaysians have good reason to be thankful to the British who helped in a major way to put down the vicious Chinese backed communist insurgency between 1948 to 1960. Had the Maoists taken over by force Malaysia would have become a charnel house run by a party tyranny. Thus the British are commemorated with honour in the national war memorial in Kuala Lumpur along with the native troops who died in that campaign.

By the same token many Afghans and Iraqis are glad enough of the western military presence. The preceding regimes - that of the murderous Taliban or the equally murderous Baathist - were hardly a good advertisement for self government. Neither were elected by the people the governed over. By contrast the present Government of Malaysia, despite imperfections, is democratic, as are the Governments in Baghdad and Kabul at least broadly speaking.

One shudders to think what kind of regime Eirgi would establish in Ireland if they held the whip hand.

Press release tonight from them called on the brits to cancel their protest and failing that for people to gather at Divis at 10.30am on Sunday. Full text of their statement on eirigi website.

Sceptics's attempt to defend what the British Army got up to in Malaysia is not surprising, he/she obviously operates from a bunker somewhere. By their own standards the BA out did itself in sadistic barbarity during the war there. And what is interesting is the fact that it was the British themselves who trained Chin, the leader of the insurgents, to fight the Japanese occupation and they actiually awarded him the OBE for his services. See any parrallels Sceptic?

It is fair to assume that a Maoist regime establishing itself in Malaysia in the 1950’s would have been of the same character as the genocidal Chinese regime of the time in China itself and in Tibet and of the regime they put into power in North Korea or the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia in the 1970’s. . The defeat of the Chinese backed forces ensured a free, prosperous and decent future for the place – something the people are grateful to the British for. They are recalled with honour there today. That was the main point.

The never ending highly partisan demonization of the British won’t wash outside of the closed minds of Eirgi and Ogra SF etc.

As we have come to expect, Sceptic knows little about the subject that he wishes to comment on. The upring in Malaysia was not inspired from without as suggested. After World War II, occupied Malaysia began a new federalization program which included laws that stated that non-Malays could only qualify as citizens if they had lived in the country for 15 of the past 25 years and had to prove proficiency in either Malay or English. The new laws did not sit well with Malaysia's significant Chinese minority, as the new laws would have essentially made them second-class citizens. They then began to turn to the Malaysian Communist Party who began to establish guerrilla cells in the jungles of the Malay Peninsula and beginning in 1948, they began sporadic attacks, mainly bombings against rubber estates and elsewhere.
The main point to hand, the barbaric behaviour of the British Army during this time, this was on a par with the worst atrocities committed by any occupying army in history. To even attempt to defend it shows either extraordinry ignorance or a sickening level of slavish, grovelling subservience

As regards the British in Malaysia you cannot always choose your allies or prevent them turning on you. All powers know that and it is a risk. But it’s a matter of priorities. The imperative at the time was to get rid of the Japanese from the peninsula. The IRA had some pretty unsavory allies in their time ranging from the Nazis to Gadaffi to the Farc and ETA. In any case the people of SE Asia much preferred the rather benign British colonials to the sinister Japanese Empire. Ask around in Singapore to hear for yourself. The British never did anything like the rape of Nanking – it was their enemies that did that sort of thing – the Nazis and the Japanese empire – enemies they got rid of in time with their allies. The pity is that the west could not do more in the area in the 1940s and 1950s. If all of Korea had been prevented to coming under communist sway the north might now be a decent place to live like the south – not a dyspepsian nightmare. But of course some cannot see beyond their small minded Anglophobia and northern Irish parochialism.

Is there no end to this rediculous claptrap from Sceptic who obviously spent the last day or two trying to back up the stupid suggestion that China was behind the uprising in Malaysia and having failed to do that, changed the subject in an effort to deflect from the obvious-Sceptic is a bullsh*ter.

We are treated to gems such as "But it’s a matter of priorities. The imperative at the time was to get rid of the Japanese from the peninsula"
Whose "imperative"? Are we to assume that you believe that the British had a right to be there in the first place?. This arrogance betrays the thinking here and indeed of the British at the time, the Malayians had no rights at all.
And then this "In any case the people of SE Asia much preferred the rather benign British colonials to the sinister Japanese Empire."
Did it ever occur to you that the people of SE Asia would have "much perferred" to be left alone and not be on the receiving end of Brirish, or anyone else's, exploitation? To refer to British rule in the region as "benign" is breathtaking. Even the worst of the revisionist brigade would never make such a claim.
The suffering that the people of this region endured at the hands of the British would sustain a sense of unease and embarrassment in any person with a modicum of wit. The atrocities of the US that followed are equally as shameful
Hiding behind the accusation that those who remind warmongerers and their fellow travellers of this of being "small minded Anglophobia" is a shallow attempt to deflect the truth. In all parts of SE Asia rthe British are hated with a passion and their persecution well remembered.
