A Minute’s Silence In Shop St, Galway Marks 5th Anniversary Of Iraq War

category galway | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Thursday March 20, 2008 20:19author by GAAW PRO - Galway Alliance Against War Report this post to the editors

Members of the Galway Alliance Against War were on the streets of the city today to mark the 5th anniversary of the US and British invasion of Iraq.

Galway Alliance Against War marked the 5th anniversary of the Iraq war today in the centre of the city. Around 100 GAAW members assembled in Shop St and formed a human chain to express their opposition to the war and the Irish state’s complicity in the conflict. A minute’s silence was held in memory of the million or more killed in this unnecessary conflict.

Four large placards were displayed to communicate GAAW’s message:

1 Illegal War in Iraq

1 Million Deaths

1 Million US Troops Through Shannon

1 Minute’s Silence

Amongst those demonstrating were Labour TD Michael D. Higgins and Independent Councillor Catherine Connolly.

Interview with President William McKinley, Nov. 21, 1899.
"I didn’t want the Philippines, and when they came to us, as a gift from the gods, I did not know what to do with them....I went down on my knees and prayed to Almighty God for light and guidance more than one night. And one night late it came to me..: That we could not give them back to Spain -- that would be cowardly and dishonorable; that we could not turn them over to France or Germany -- our commercial rivals...; that we could not leave them to themselves -- they were unfit for self-government...; and that there was nothing left for us to do but to take them all, and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them, and by God’s grace do the very best we could by them, as our fellow men for whom Christ also died. And then I went to bed, and went to sleep, and slept soundly.''

-- William McKinley President of the United States (1897-1901)
