Senator Pat Doherty explains party's position to Shell and Statoil Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty yesterday met with representatives of Shell and Statoil to clearly outline his and Sinn Féin’s opposition to the terms and conditions under which gas exploration companies operate in Ireland and in Irish Waters. “I also made clear Sinn Féin’s opposition to the Rossport gas pipeline and to the dangers is poses. There are a number of drills coming up off the coast of Donegal from April. It is proposed that any gas found will be refined onshore. Sinn Féin will oppose the refinement of this gas onshore as it will require a similar dangerous pipeline to run through communities in Donegal. |

Donegal is set to benefit substantially from offshore oil drilling this year.
Donegal Airport management and Sinbad Marine Services attended a briefing this week at which it was confirmed they will be supporting the Shell Exploration project and the Statoil Hydro project off the North West coast.
In the past, this has involved around five flights from Aberdeen and five helicopter transfers to the rigs each week,
Marketing Manager of the Airport is Pauline Sweeney.
She says this year there will be 12 weekly flights from Aberdeen and Stravanger in Norway, and around 14 weekly transfers.
I hardly think the few extra flights in and out of Donegal airport will make up for the billions of euro the Irish people are handing over to these oil companies and to Sor Anto O Reilly.
Donegal Airport may gain a little from the current projects but that pales in relation to what it could gain were the refineries moved offshore.
Again we see people who are pennies wise and pounds foolish.
As this country slides quickly into recession our natural resources are being handed to a string of multinationals (one with 'Royal'
and 'Dutch' in its name), even as we speak. Meanwhile, the people of Erris, where a taste of true Irishness is still to be found, are being
subjected to regular brutality from Ireland's Finest.
Could we sideline the 'I'm more of a Republican than you' argument for a while and focus on what we should be doing about these
issues, namely to increase national and international awareness about what the country we used to believe in has become?
This is exactly what S2S have been doing here and in England over the past few days, but we can't keep doing it alone forever, so
please , munar mhiste libh, can we stay on topic and pursue this argument on a different thread?
We don't have time for self-indugence.
im irish and working in the north sea on a oil rig . i think its good that oil companys are intrested in coming to ireland to drill for oil and gas it will create lots of jobs on shore and offshore and lets all face it we really need jobs theres nothing else in ireland right now.
