Sound the alarm for Climate Change

category dublin | environment | news report author Sunday December 09, 2007 17:16author by Gavin Harte - Stop Climate Chaos Report this post to the editors

On Saturday about 800 hundred people gathered at the Dublin Civic Offices and walked to the Custom House as part of the “Parade for the Planet”  to mark the international day of action on climate change.

The event “Sound the Alarm for Climate Change”, was organised by Stop Climate Chaos and coincided with the ringing of church bells across the country signalling concern that climate change may soon have irreversible impacts for us all.

The church bells sounded at 2pm to highlight how a two degree increase in the earths temperature may cause a tipping point in the earths climate after which rising global temperatures are likely to have irreversible impacts.

Stop Climate Chaos is a coalition of civil society organisations campaigning to ensure Ireland plays its part in preventing runaway climate change. Current members include development, environmental, youth and faith based organisations.

Stop Climate Chaos Call to Action:

1.     Push for an international agreement to keep the rise in global temperatures to 2 degrees C or less. This means global greenhouse gas emissions must reach their peak and begin to decline irreversibly within 10 years.
2.     Ensure Ireland does its fair share to prevent climate chaos by implementing the polluter pays principal and immediately bringing in a climate change law which provides for an annual Carbon Budget and 3% year-on-year reductions in Irish greenhouse gas emissions.
3.     Support developing countries to adapt to the unavoidable effects of climate change.
