Shell to Sea campaigners On-Site at Bellanboy

category mayo | environment | news report author Monday August 27, 2007 11:14author by Bob-RSC Report this post to the editors

Several protesters have entered the Bellanaboy site; all work has stopped

This morning at around 9 30 a number of protesters entered the site via the main gate as it was being opened for a delivery of materials. The action was in response to reports of poor quality concrete being used in the laying of foundations for the refinery. All work on site has ceased.

Three Gardai arrived at around 10 and have advised the protesters to leave but have not forcibly removed anyone as of yet. The group is believed to be negotiating with personnel on the site to be allowed inspect what work is being done.

It seems there was an extremely low-key police presence today and activists had to physically stop a squad car- which was intent on driving past the site-by standing in front of it, to get the gardaí to take notice of the fact that one of the Shell lorries had no tax.

We'll have to watch out for that prosecution...

It's expected that the gardaí will be ordered back in their usual force tomorrow morning.

good to see that recent change of tactic by the state and gardai (ie truing to incarcerate and drag porgressive elements within the local community and campaign through the courts and in to jail) haven't lessened the resolve of locals and other activists alike
