Agent Provocateurs Caught in the Act

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Thursday August 23, 2007 10:38author by indyjourno Report this post to the editors

A video has surfaced on YouTube indicating that the police used provocateurs at the summit in Montebello.

Canadian Union of Public Employees or CUPE, has uploaded pictures of the altercation that show the arrested “protesters” have the same footwear as the police.
The video and photos show that the protesters are moving into the police line as a union leader challenges their actions and tries to expose them as police officers.

If you in your stocking feet & stentorian speechmaking measure up to either Jim Larkin (very big man with a great loud voice ) or Evo Morales (quite short in the physical stakes but easy to hear) - you're a leader.
If you've paid all your membership dues & examine market survey data with the purpose of ascertaining the most cost efficient way to repackage the logo & manifesto of centre right neo-liberal politics as a fitting follow-up to the Pat Rabbitte years of bringing tolerance of right wing policies and ushering in the progressive democrats -
you're a bureaucrat.

oh gosh - I slipped in to radio mode there (c/f http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/0826/rabbittep.html )

Just out of interest - are there standard issue Garda boots in Ireland? I know sandals are out (along with the turbans). Over here (in the spanish state which boasts more types of police than we can count on any one limb) we just identify them by their retractable batons & penchant for using oriental martial arts weapons like the kubaton. But of course that realisation and id process comes after they've provoked trouble. I suggest an informal discussion on how to identify agent provacateurs & what to do about it is in order. So that this Quebec story shines as a milestone on our (slipping in stentorian hectoring now) LONG ROAD TO SOCIALISM.

Great video. But could somebody please explain to me what the difference is between a union leader and a union bureaucrat. Is it that when such people do things we approve of we call them workers' leaders or trade union leaders ,but when they do things we don't like we call them bureaucrats ? I've never been able to work work it out.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=gAfzUOx53Rg in English language vid form
& from the piggies mouth in French http://www.suretequebec.gouv.qc.ca/accueil/communiques/....html which more or less says that after analysing the vid taken by the police (note neither the media or protesters) it's now appropriate to confirm that these individuals are Quebecker police. They were acting under orders to identify non-pacifist protesters and prevent rioting. The police officers were mingling with the protesters and (check this out) they refused to throw projectiles. (quite right the trade union dued shamed that cop to drop the rock.....now it gets good......) at no time do the police force of Quebec act [are deployed] as agent provacateurs or to commit criminal acts. Moreover it is not in the policy of service of the police nor their strategy to act in such a manner. At all times they carried out their duty in maintaining order & security. [pretty much to that effect]

They were caught.

Well done. The video was just fine and showed an intelligent union leader acting immediately to curtail underhand police abuse of an anti-globalisation protest. Popular protests can be targeted by infiltrators from the right, or sometimes the far left, with resulting confusion, and ultimate demobilisation of actual and potential support.

the mark on the base of the boots is only on the brand sold to the military and police, the yellow mark is on the inside sole on the civilian make.

The main evidence that they were cops is that none of the other demonstrators knew them and when they were found out, they started moving towards the police lines and then very obviously pushed their way into the arms of the police so that they could be conveniently "arrested" / rescued before any of the demonstrators had a chance to remove their identical bandanas. The police later denied that the three had been arrested, taken into custody or charged with any offence: "No comment".

I'm sure next time, the Canadian police will be a bit more subtle.

That the activists and cops have the same taste in practical bovver boots for riots and such ???
Nothing more mysterious than that?

This is a photo of the three cops being 'arrested'. As you'll see their footwear is identical to those of the riot cops 'arresting' them.

There is dome decent coverage of this story in Canadian mainstream media (CBC News) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWbgnyUCC7M

It features an interview with Doug Kirkland, a retired Ottowa policeman (in charge of security at demonstrations) who reckons that the odds are "pretty slim" that the three in masks are legitimate protesters and that such police activity is "stretching the bounds of proper police intelligence".
