In tandem with this secret diplomacy, the IRA's armed campaign continued - at great intensity.

The question has to be asked - for what purpose?

There was no need for an armed campaign if the objective was the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. Such a settlement was the fixed policy of both the London and Dublin Governments from the early 1970's onwards.

The Sunningdale Agreement of 1973 - an internal settlement Mark 1 - was, if anything, a better deal for the Catholic Minority than the current Paisley/McGuinness right-wing coalition sitting on Stormont Hill.

about the killing of the IRA unit at Loughgall and that this particular IRA unit was intending to split from the IRA because they disagreed with the strategy of Adams.

Gerry and his faithful sidekick (IGOR) sorry >>> I meant Martin would never betray their "republican" loyalties and beliefs, that they would sacrifice anybodys life so that they could travel around the world followed by the press being dined and wined by western and a few eastern leaders, Nay thrice nay... them guys are true blues. ( frueidan slip )... Would Gerry or Martin ever sell their souls or the souls of their dead young comrades so they could eat early morning Belfast Breakfast with the devil himself and his sidekicks ..Ian, Junior, Peter, Nigel , etc etc

This rubbish about Loughgall being a set-up is akin to the 9/11 conspiracy theory nonsense. It might be politically useful if it were true but then so would the notion that Bush and the CIA mined the Twin Towers. Get a grip before you make a complete eegit of yourself.

The notable historian and writer Tim Pat Coogan claims that the road to peace began in 1979
with the visit to Ireland of Pope John Paul II and his plea from Drogheda to the men of violence -
that the IRA leadership took him seriously and began to investigate the possibility of there being
another way.

If memory serves me correctly he made this claim some years on RTE t.v., to promote his latest book, got up some anti-church RTE noses, and hasn't been asked back since. (This is a personal viewpoint)

- discuss please (but don't respond with a knee-jerk dismissal)
