Shell conceded!

category international | environment | other press author Saturday May 12, 2007 10:37author by IT watcher Report this post to the editors

Shell admits trying to cut corners.

In Thursdays Irish Times http://www.corribsos.com/index.php?id=1421 it is reported by Aine Ryan that in their closing statements,

Senior counsel for Shell E&P Ireland, Esmonde Keane conceded that Shell would be happy to expand its "robust monitoring" system of the marine environment around the discharge point from the refinery in line with proposals made by expert witness Prof Peter Matthiessen, who had appeared on behalf of a local shell fish group.

why now would they agree to a proper monitoring regime, and why did they attempt to get away with such a limited monitoring programme in their IPPC license application?
I wonder what else are they trying to minimise, has anybody investageted the proposed monitoring of the air quality around the refinery itself, and is it found to be sufficient.
I didnt hear of it being mentioned at the EPA hearings.

the only reason they conceded anything is that if they argued against proper monotoring it would look bad fro them.
it has nothing to do with them wanting to be closly watched.
the monitoring around the terminal is to be done by Mayo CoCo, it must be seen as suffficent as there was no complaints about it at the hearings {as far as I am aware}

Mayo CoCo seems to be entirely compliant with anything that S.hell desires, so don't expect them to act on behalf of the health & welfare of Mayo people.

if Mayo COCO arent to be trusted, how will proper monitoring of the toxic emmisions from the refinery(if it is built) occur.
if shell gets a ippc licence from the epa, then you can forget about getting additional monitoring by anybody.
