Save The Sacred Bull

category international | animal rights | other press author Thursday May 10, 2007 17:07author by Jerry Cornelius Report this post to the editors

Yet another example of Western thought coming into conflict with Eastern culture. In this case there is a solution which might allow the Hindus to keep their Sacred Bull and will also protect humans and other animals from infection. The Animal Health Act 2001 allows for ill animals to be treated rather than slaughtered in all cases.

Ignorant officials are refusing to consider this. Full article at link.

Slaughtering Shambo would 'violate' tradition say Hindu forum

Hindus have launched a last minute appeal to prevent the slaughter of a sacred bull which has tested positive for tuberculosis.
The bull, Shambo, lives in a shrine in Llanpumsaint, Carmarthenshire.

Officials at the Skanda Vale Temple and the Hindu Forum of Britain, say the killing of cows and bulls is against their religious principles.

But the Welsh assembly government said infected animals were slaughtered to "protect both human and animal health".

I know I count on poor Irish peoples' support, because your lives are so without glamour and fun you need me - and also because my press team have checked your justice records and noted drink driving is ok if you're rich or powerful.

I'm both.

Send Shambo a playmate!

My understanding, from reading "Private Eye" is thus:

Farmers won't support an exemption for the sacred bull, because they see this as a complete double standard - they are under the same rules. I know that in Ireland, domestic pets are not regulated by the department of agriculture - would there be a possible loop-hole there in the UK?

Also: my understanding is that a more thorough test to see if an animal actually has the disease for sure (this current test is by no means proof positive, but more a statistical correlation); however, Private Eye's "Muckspreader" says that this could then be used to zone in on infected Badger setts, and since this is politically unacceptable, the poor bull has to be sacrificed.

anyway the foot and mouth thing... was isolated to a lab in England, owned by a US concern.
The aer rianta controls are something else with bristling security and pads round the place.
our last outbreak in 2001 saw the cancellation of St patrick's Day parades and the Horse
Show.
There is , as yet, no release on whether criminal charges will follow regarding the release
of toxins into the Uk Countryside.
