Gardaí and Shell are happy with progress in Mayo

category mayo | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Saturday April 07, 2007 00:45author by Shell to Sea Report this post to the editors

Peat haulage continues while Garda operation "contains" protests

This week's Mayo Advertiser reports that Shell are very happy with the progress of peat removal from their refinery site at Bellanaboy in County Mayo, which started earlier this week. The surface of the site has to be removed before construction of the refinery can begin.

The Gardaí say they are also happy with their operation, reporting that they have easily contained the demonstrations and protests. The massive Garda operation has been widely criticised, with those opposed to the Shell/Govt scheme arguing that if protesters are breaking the law they should be arrested, and if not they should not be interfered with. To date there have been no arrests in this current phase of the conflict.
Gardaí say they are happy with their operation
Gardaí say they are happy with their operation

People from around the country will travel to Mayo in the coming weeks to join the protests. Many local people have welcomed this news, and have asked that those interested in the issue should make their way to Bellanaboy to see the situation for themselves. A delegation of visitors from the United States will visit the area at the end of next week.

If you are in Dublin and are interested in travelling to Bellanaboy call 087 132 3369 or 085 718 7968 or send an email to DublinShelltoSea@gmail.com.

Progress with drilling and peat haulage in Corrib gas project

by Fiona McGarry

Major progress is being reported this week by the developers of the Corrib gas project.

The Corrib gas partners say they have resumed drilling activities off the Erris coast and begun once again to haul peat from the terminal site.

A semi-submersible rig is operating 83km off the Erris coast, and the partners plan to complete a total of five wells to prepare for production by next October.

The Corrib field is in 350m of water with the gas reservoir a further 3,000m below the seabed. The Sedco 711 drilling rig, which is being used in the Corrib gas field, is capable of operating in harsh environments and water depths of up to 550m. A type of underwater robot will be operated from the surface while performing construction and maintenance work in water that is too deep for commercial diving.

The Corrib gas partners have also announced that the peat haulage operation has resumed at Bellanaboy. The operation will involve moving 350,000 tonnes of peat from the site of the proposed onshore terminal at Bellanaboy to a Bord na Móna cut-over site at Srahmore, 11km away. The partners say the operation will be completed by October when construction of the onshore gas processing plant will begin.

The developers of the project have said that health and safety is a key priority of the Corrib project and that they are “committed to building and operating a world-class facility at Bellanaboy in partnership with the local community”. The partners also said that “all decisions around the Corrib project are taken with due regard for the local community and with concern for the protection of the environment”.

The developers have also welcomed the Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to hold an oral hearing on the awarding of an operating licence to Shell E&P Ireland for the terminal. Referring to the hearing, which begins in Belmullet on Monday April 16, Terry Nolan, Shell E&PI’s Deputy Managing Director, said the event would “provide an opportunity for those with genuine concerns to have their issues addressed in an open forum by the competent authority”.

Meanwhile, Dr Mark Garavan, Seanad candidate and a member of Shell to Sea has claimed that “fair observers” of the Corrib gas project believe the financial deal under which the Corrib field is being developed is “unfair and wrong”. Dr Garavan noted that General Election candidates speaking on last week’s special broadcast of Tonight with Vincent Browne from Castlebar condemned the deal as wrong. “In addition, Mayo County Council, Westport Town Council and Castlebar Town Council have voted in recent weeks unanimously in support of motions calling for a renegotiation of the deal. Ballina Town Council is due to do the same next week,” Dr Garavan added.

This week, there were a number of protests at the terminal site and a van was seized for delaying trucks. However, Gardai easily controlled the gatherings and there was no interference with Shell E&PI workers.

This Gas Refinery will cause a rise in mercury levels entering the environment, and no matter now slight that rise is, any additional mercury entering the environment is an ominous sign, as it has the potential to affect people's health and marine animal life in the form of methyl mercury contamination. I attach some further information so people can be aware how this could impact on their health and our marine life.

CL is apparently a fan of the Shell Gas Refinery and loves nothing more than polluting the environment - that's his/her problem!

Cl is still harping on about a study based on data supplied by Shell - hardly safe ground to make sweeping statements.

We all know their are tiny traces of heavy metals occuring naturally in the marine environment - problems only arise when industry discharges concentrated amounts into a water body - as Shell propose to do in the case of Broadhaven bay SAC.

Mercury Decision: 'Virtually All' Mercury In Ocean Fish Is 'From Natural Sources'

On Friday, when the scales of justice swung in California's landmark mercury-in-tuna court case, they hit some cherished environmental dogma squarely in the face. Green groups have long held that the trace amounts of methylmercury in fish (tuna being the most oft-cited example) are the result of pollution caused by human beings. In fact, most of the environmental campaigns that hype the theoretical health risks of eating fish are really aimed at changing clean-air laws. Fish are just a stalking horse, used to whip up fear about mercury in the environment. But now, at least in California, the truth has become a matter of law -- that the vast majority of these tiny traces of mercury are as natural as the earth itself.

Absolutely CL, and after your recent outburst, gloating at the thought of peaceful protesters being assaulted by the Gardai, it's becoming increasingly hard for you to maintain your laughable pose as a disinterested observer raising questions. You're perfectly free to continue dishonest trolling, but don't expect people to be taken in.

why,Jacqueline?

I have stated before, that if S2S stops posting claims they (should) know to be untrue, I would stop pointing out they are untrue.
how difficult would it be for Jacqueline to have done a simple search on Google, and have discovered ..........http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/12/0312050533...6.htm

" Mercury levels in yellowfin tuna caught off the coast of Hawaii have not changed in 27 years, despite a considerable increase in atmospheric mercury during this time, according to a new study. The findings suggest that the high levels of mercury that have been found in tuna and other ocean fish may not be coming from pollution, but from natural sources."

The report by Prof. Matthiessen concludes that the discharges will "NOT" have any serious effect on the marine environment
Your claims that the discharge will cause mercury contamination in fish, will (if believed) cause a lot more problems for the local fishing industry than the discharge itself!
Discharges to sea of produced water from gas fields are nothing new, it has occurred for decades, if you have a genuine interest in protecting the public I suggest that you produce an example of where/when a similar discharge has been shown/suspected to have caused any such problems!

your claim "There is ample evidence worldwide of the connection between dangerous levels of methyl mercury stored in larger fish and Dolphins and Whales, and gas refineries and power plants emitting discharges of waste containing mercury.
see
http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/522270_2

see also http://www.ewg.org/reports/brainfood/execsumm.html?prin...ion=1

Mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants are the largest man-made source of environmental mercury,

were you serious when you stated "Dolphins and Whales would have extremely high levels of build-up of methyl mercury in their systems, and if they died, the risk from this stored contaminant in their system could have devastating environmental impacts"

That is a new one, how desperate would one need to get , to suggest that a single whale dying could have devastating environmental impacts?

your logic on Effects on Tourist Industry:, you win hands down on that, I never had any problem with logical debate/discussion on this project, giveaway of natural resources, arrogant attitude of the developers
dangerous high pressure production pipeline .ect.
Are all relevant points which should be scrutinized, but when you get individuals posting claims which are easily discredited/disproven, that is and always was what I have a problem with.

Please remember "you are not as clever as you think you are, and other people are not as dumb as you think they are!" (old, but true proverb)

Effects on Fishing Industry:

No matter how low the levels of mercury which will be discharged into Broadhaven Bay from the outflow pipe of the refinery, any additional mercury entering the bay poses a risk. Additional Mercury (as it does occur naturally as well) discharged from the outflow pipe into Broadhaven Bay will affect fish, as mercury is stored in their bodies and can build-up over time to highly toxic levels and is excreted from the fish’s system very slowly. When the fish, unfortunately for them, enter the food chain and into people's mouths, high levels of methyl mercury are consumed, which could result in neurological problems and nervous disorders and other problems affecting the nervous systems of humans (methyl mercury is also excreted slowly from humans). There is ample evidence worldwide of the connection between dangerous levels of methyl mercury stored in larger fish and Dolphins and Whales, and gas refineries and power plants emitting discharges of waste containing mercury. Dolphins and Whales would have extremely high levels of build-up of methyl mercury in their systems, and if they died, the risk from this stored contaminant in their system could have devastating environmental impacts, such as water pollution, and highly toxic methyl mercury level rises in fish and inevitably, when the fish enter the human system, methyl mercury could cause a myriad of neurological problems, being particularly harmful to unborn children and infants.

When this Gas Refinery ever gets built (and I hope it doesn't), fish caught in and around Broadhaven Bay, I hope, will be tested for high levels of methyl mercury before entering the food chain, this is particularly of concern and relevance to pregnant women, as the foetus would be very vulnerable to poisoning and neurological problems as a result of the rise of methyl mercury in fish, accelerated by the discharge of mercury from the gas refinery.

Here are some data sources to back-up my concerns: www.fmi.org/consumer/seafood.pdf and also
www.environmentaldefense.org/documents/3370_MercuryPowerPlants.pdf.

Effects on Tourist Industry:

Tourism will be affected, because it is not exactly aesthetically pleasing to take your holiday snaps at a location that contains a gas refinery in the background of an otherwise unspoilt scenic environment, nor do I know anyone who would like to picnic at a gas refinery, although you, perhaps, are one of the few!

Shells own plans show where their outflow pipe will pump into, and it's no secret the type of things to come out of it. Does someone else have to write a report for you to state that these things are harmful?

Jacqueline can you please include a reference to the source of the data for the claim you made below!

"Also, the environment and tourist industry, particularly the fishing industry, will suffer as a result of the construction of this gas refinery and pipeline, with waste being pumped into Broadhaven Bay, which will have detrimental effects on a variety of our precious marine mammals and wildlife."

As apart from S2S retroic, I cannot find any data that suggests this discharge will cause any of what you claim.

So, An Garda Síochána ('The Not So Peaceful Guardians') are delighted that our country's natural resources will be given away for nothing to Shell and that the people of this country (which includes them by the way) will have to purchase the gas back at market price - yes, we have some right unthinking 'tulips' in this organisation surely!

The Gardaí, as well as being pleased at our natural resources being taken by Shell, are also very pleased apparently with their treatment of the protestors, which involves beating the shite out of them, and reportedly bugging the protestors telephone lines, harassing and throwing anyone who dares to protest into ditches and abusing them - yes, it speaks volumes about this corrupt organisation alright! All this makes me wonder if An Garda Síochána are being paid by Shell, or is there a lot of money in it for them, given their ludicrous fanatical support and their willingness to protect Shell at all costs and the extreme violence they have shown towards the local protestors whose lands are being taken against their will?

I would like to applaud the people of Bellanaboy and all the Erris community and all others who turned out to voice their disgust at this robbery of our natural resources. It should be noted that this robbery was instigated as a result of Shell's lobbying of Criminal/Rogue 'Minister' Ray Burke (who eradicated Ireland's stake of 50% of any gas find and royalties), which today means all the people of Ireland lose out - those for and against this gas refinery and pipeline - nobody in this country benefits, as we will all have to purchase the gas back at market price (incl. the Gardaí). It is an absolute disgrace!

Also, the environment and tourist industry, particularly the fishing industry, will suffer as a result of the construction of this gas refinery and pipeline, with waste being pumped into Broadhaven Bay, which will have detrimental effects on a variety of our precious marine mammals and wildlife.

Best of luck to all the Shell protestors everywhere!
