Merckel's Double Whammy

Angela Merckel assumed yesterday the presidency of the EU and will host the G8 in 2007.
She is from the Christian right in Germany and notably stopped funding to stem cell research
programmes 24 hours after president Bush made use of his presidential veto in the US
to achieve the same thing.

Angela Merckel enjoys a close relationship with Pope Benedict the XVI, (indeed with the
exception of the schismatic Pope Benedict the XIII- {Peter De Luna from Aragon}- he would
be Pope Benedict the XVII).
