The Great War and its Consequences in Ireland

category dublin | arts and media | event notice author Monday October 02, 2006 13:10author by Forelock Tugger Report this post to the editors

Talk by Kevin Myers, Airfield House, Dundrum, Dublin 14

The official history of Ireland pre-1921 has emphasised minor peasant revolts and natural famines at the expense of it’s long and glorious history as a proud constituent of the British Empire.

State recognition of the role of Irishmen in World War was finally granted on July 1st 2006, and a talk detailing this long journey ,"The Great War and its Consequences in Ireland" will be given on Tuesday 7 November by Mr. Kevin Myers, esteemed Irish Independent columnist and champion of the traditional family structure. He has long waged a noble struggle to reclaim some of this shamefully neglected history with his campaign for recognition of Irish soldiers who participated in the Great War of 1914-18 and indeed for all Irishmen who proudly wore red or khaki to keep China British.

Well, now, if it had gone the other way we would have had the German King Joachim (the kaiser's youngest son) with Pearse and Conolly as his ministers. Joachim, when off-duty liked to sing what were called 'nigger songs' in English, like Camptown Races. Sounds rather fun.

Instead we got Dev...and have to pay for our mercedeses.

The first war was not a colonial or ideological one but a squabble between imperialist trading blocs determined to cripple a rising industrial , economic and trading competitor . Germany had no interest whatsoever in occupying Ireland , nor France nor Belgium for that matter . Such wars between actual human beings as opposed to colonial wars against lesser humans ended with treaties and gentlemans agreements and the armies went on their merry way home afterwards. Germany offered Irish republicans a very nice mutually beneficial arrangement . The establishment of an Irish republic would hamper British access to Atlantic naval ports and enable German access to them , not to mention tying down numerous British troops in attempt to hold on to their colonial possession . Germany decided it was in their strategic interest to support Ireland with military aid and possibly even an expeditionary force with further miltary aid such as artillery should a successful rebellion take hold for at least a couple of months . It also offered to demand that Britain formally recognise the right of the Irish people to sovereignty and independence as an integral part of any post war treaty they would sign with Britain upon the wars end , which untill the involvement of the US superpower was virtually certain to result in a convincing German victory
Unfortuantely the yanks opted to back the Brits , Germany was not beaten but certainly unable to win . They signed the disastrous and humiliating Versailles Treaty and they and us were well and truly shafted , along with the ARabs , Vietnamese and all sorts of people . They got Hitler and we got Kevin Myers . Neither unfortunate nation may ever shake of their respective national shame
