Prof Wouter Poortinga, an Environmental Psychologist at the University of Cardiff, says the public's abandonment of Net Zero is due to politicians "politicising" it. No, says Ben Pile. They just won't be gaslit anymore.

Solidarity with Basque political prisoner on 56th day on hunger strike

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Thursday September 28, 2006 18:28author by Irish Basque Committeesauthor email irishbasques at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Inaki De Juana was force fed last week but despite the warnings told by the doctors about the consequences of his decission he decided to go ahead as it's the only weapon he can use to fight the Spanish states' bid to keep him in prison for life.

There are another 10 Basque political prisoners in the same situation. All of them did their sentences to the full but the Spanish government keep them as political hostages. There are more than 100 Basque prisoners who should have been released under parole but they have been denied this right. It's time for a democratic resolution to the conflict between the Basque Country and the Spanish and French states and this measures don't help at all after ETA's unilateral ceasefire six months ago.

Support the Basque political prisoners!!
Support the democratic process in the Basque Country!!

Watch this documentary by an Aussie channel

The Spanish Inquisition.

For years now, the Basque people of Spain have alleged that Spanish police have regularly tortured suspects, arrested for having connections with the Basque separatist group ETA. Recently, those allegations have been backed up by the UN Human Rights Commission. This disturbing story actually comes at an interesting time in the decades-long Basque conflict.

Inaki De Juana should have been released under parole on the 25th of October 2004 as the Spanish penal law recognise. The Spanish government tried to stop all his redemssions but a judge in the Audiencia Nacional (Spanish Special Court inheritated from the Franco's Public Order Tribunal) refused all allegations as not legal. Then the Spanish government made up new charges upon two opinion article Inaki De Juana wrote in the newspaper Gara. He's been requested 96 years of prison for the two articles (what democratic state in this crazy world would do such a thing?). Again a judge in the Audiencia Nacional said that it wasn't anything that could be illegal in those articles. Allegations were made and the case is now on a superior judge's hands. Inaki finally did his sentence to the full under Spanish laws on the 7th of August 2006.

Comments as the ones above are based not on ignorance (I'm sure this Spaniard who sounds like Franco and the Guardia Civil knows the facts) but on hate and fascism.

This is Indymedia Éire. If you want to use far right wing comments and rubish I'm sure the PD's or even Fine Gael will have a nice chat for you and the ones like you.

Among all the Indymedia sites I know unfortunately the Éire's one is the one with more fascist and right wing comments. Let's not loose our time with them.

GAL was another terrorist group, and a big mistake of the Spanish government of that time, and an embarrasment for the Spanish people, so in that point you're right and there were killings from the other side too. However, GAL is already dismantled and their members in prison, while ETA is alive (although in an unstoppable slow death, mainly by lack of support from the Basque population) and some people still cheer them. I don't think they're fully comparable though, as GAL killed 23 people while ETA has killed 934 so far (and counting...), although the loss of any single life is a tragedy regardless of who is the killer.

One thing I've noticed both in this post and other related is that the anti-ETA comments are written with respect, while the pro-killers include "friendly" words like "idiot", "pathetic", "fascist",... It's obvious who believes on the strenght of their ideas and who thinks they need the use of violence, even verbal, to support them...

only one side is the one killing people.
Ever hear of GAL you blinkered idiot? Or the torturers and murders of the Guardia Civil? What is their emblem again? Save your ranting for your next PP meeting.

-"the Spanish government keep them as political hostages": De Juana is in jail because he killed 25 people between 1985 and 1986. He is a TERRORIST, not a political prisoner.

-"All of them did their sentences to the full". De Juana was sentenced to 2,995 years (yes, it's right) for his killings in those years. To do the sentence to the full would be to die in prison. He had now profited from prison benefits set by a Government he doesn't believe in. At least he should have the pride to stick to his ideas and do his sentence in full.

-"ETA's unilateral ceasefire". All ceasefires are unilateral when only one side is the one killing people.

-"fight the Spanish states' bid to keep him in prison for life". De Juana wrote in the Gara newspaper 2 articles, "Gallizo" and "El Escudo" last year, in which he admitted his membership to ETA, and threatened several high members of the Prisons system. In Spain, belonging to a Terrorist group or threatening the life of other people is a crime he has to be judged for.

Support the democratic process in the Basque Country, by getting rid of ETA and their threatening methods of "persuasion" and leaving the peaceful Basques to decide!!

If you go to the GPO, you are just an accomplice of De Juana.

-Iñaki de Juana Chaos, remembering the killing of the Becerril couple, a Seville city council member and his wife, in 1998:
“I love to see the shattered faces of the families in the funerals. Here, in jail, their cries are our smiles and we’ll end up laughing loud. This last action in Seville has been perfect. With it, I’ve eaten for the whole month”
