Greenpeace leads protest against Australian mining company in Philippines Legaspi, 23 August 2006 - After helping mitigate the devastation wrought by the Petron oil spill in Guimaras Island, Greenpeace ship MY Esperanza today led a flotilla in protest against the gold and silver mining operations of Lafayette in the Philippines. The Australian mine was reopened in July despite government investigations, which revealed ongoing leakages of highly toxic chemicals into the pristine waters of the Albay Gulf. The Esperanza sailed into Rapu-Rapu Island accompanied by villagers

Jump To Comment: 2 1Sadly the Australian public is not aware of the toxic cyanide spills causing environmental destruction and poisoning the sea and humans in the Lafayette gold mine in the Phillipines. Major sponsor ANZ bank is one of the top 5 Australian banks, and their latest television advertising campaign strangely omits mention of cyanide poisoning off shore. Major newspapers are silent too, only Greenpeace supporters are given freedom of the press. Thank heaven for Irish indymedia!
