What are FAS up to?

category national | worker & community struggles and protests | opinion/analysis author Thursday May 25, 2006 14:38author by Liam Mullen - Freelance journalist Report this post to the editors

Have they become a springboard for illegal immigration?

Although FAS JobsIreland have been in the news a lot lately regarding their proposed move under decentralisation, many of their job advertisements in recent months seem designed to promote illegal immigration.

Under Arts and Literature for example, a number of Radio Presenter positions are being sought for Swords, Co. Dublin. The basic requirement – Latvian speaking, South African speaking, Nigerian speaking, Lituanian speaking, Pakistani speaking, Indian and Russian speaking. What radio station is engaged in employing such a diverse set of linguistic people, one wonders?
Irish people applying for these jobs are not getting replies or even acknowledgements of their applications. The question must be asked: Has FAS become a springboard for illegal immigration into this country? At the time of going to press, FAS has acknowledged a complaint on this issue, but has not reverted with a substantive explanation.
Vacant jobs within Ireland are supposed to be advertised for the benefit of unemployed Irish and EU citizens, but it seems this government is operating a two-tiered approach to employment rights within this country.

Liam your some nobody trying to create stories out of nothing, and promoting racism at the same time, these jobs are for a specific multi-ethnic radio station, who are obviously interested in encouraging diferrent language programs for newcomers here, who else would be able to speak all these languages, its quite clear who these jobs are for.

I shouldn't have to do your work for you but here you go
http://jobbank.fas.ie/servlet/Watis?SESS=86103_4&SERVIC...W.HTM
again you could easily supply weblinks to this story yet you don't which speaks volumes. I don't know much about Sunrise radio but anyway it has very little to do with FAS.

Why do you not even mention the Radio station putting out these ads.
Your unuanced race-baiting stories have already been criticised.

Actually what grades are you getting for these 'articles'.

Nothing to do with racism Anon, but everything to do with Irish employment rights for Irish and EU applicants. If I decide to criticise a state agency, then that is my right, and I don't expect to be branded a "racist" for doing so?

Forget the race thing its muddy, why did you single out FAS rather then Sunrise radio, why not even mention the name Sunrise Radio, the FAS thing is just a listing service.

Re: Liam Mullen

Your article is bogus. There are very few illegal immigrants in Ireland. The biggest visa over stayers are US citizens, followed by Australian citizens.

If you are worried about trafficking of people to Ireland, then try your journalist skills pining down the well known drug dealers and "respectable" Irish business men who control this modern day slave trade.

My anti-racist senses tell me that you are one of these people who will make up a story to create a scare, to make an issue......good luck and good night..... you are destined for a successful career in mainstream journalism.

Hi, I am know a lot Nigerian speaking, swahili speaking, Lingala speaking, bangladeshi speaking zulu speaking shona speaking ,,,,,,, Irish people and when i define Irish - it is by the passport/nationality they hold. Not the colour of their skin country of birth ethnicity or culture. The writer of that article needs to open his/her mind.

This Liam can't even get his facts straight, there is no "South African" language unless he means Afrikaans spoken by the descendents of Dutch settlers, also there are several African origin languages such as Zulu, Xhosa languages etc and of course English is widely spoken in SA. Also, I don't think there is a language called Pakistani, they speak Urdu, Punjabi etc there I believe and also english. Either Liam or Fas have got their facts completely wrong!

I welcome multi-ethnic radio for Swords and can say at the outset that anything will be better than the Joe Duffy phone-in show.

Who knows but the new station producers may come up with innovative programmes i.e. a West African ceili dancing programme featuring a mixture of instruments such a bodhran, fiddle, spoons Yoruba war drums, calabash rattles, senegalese wooden xylophones, fadog stan and the bosca ceoil.
Let's have lots of multicultural hooleys and celebrate our newfound Irish diversity. It could cheer up a lot of distressed mortgage holders during these uncertain recessionary times.
