Well-known actor and anti-war activist Martin Sheen today condemned the Irish government's facilitation of U.S. warplanes and troops at Shannon Airport. Sheen, who has starred as fictional U.S. president Jay Bartlett in the series 'The West Wing' as well as the films 'Apocalypse Now' and 'Badlands' was receiving and Honorary Arts doctorate in NUIG. He is due to start studying in Galway at the beginning of the new Uni. year.

by Frank McNally (Irish Times)

The Government should not believe anything the US says about its use of Shannon airport, because the White House is controlled by "a bunch of gangsters", The West Wing actor Martin Sheen has claimed. Nice one, Damo. That article looked good on the front of the Irish Times, with a nice portrait of Sheen and all.

Let's hope Sheen does distract his fellow students at NUIG - and, in fact, the whole of Galway - by inviting them all to go down and demonstrate with him the next time Bush visits Shannon.

Best,
Coilín.
