category national | rights, freedoms and repression | press release author Wednesday March 01, 2006 18:08author by Charlene - Ógra Shinn Féin Report this post to the editors

In memory of the Ten!

On Wednesday 1st March Ógra Shinn Féin activists throughout Ireland will take to the streets to mark the date Bobby Sands began hungerstrike 25 years ago.

On Wednesday 1st March Ógra Shinn Féin activists throughout Ireland will take to the streets to mark the date Bobby Sands began hungerstrike 25 years ago.
A range of events to be held will include vigils and torch lit processions in Omagh and Dromore Co. Tyrone and Derry.

A blanket protest will be enacted outside Belfast City Hall at 1PM and the National Hungerstrike exhibition will be on display in Dundalk IT.

Mickey Bravender Ógra national organiser commented “25 years ago on 1st March 1981 IRA prisoner Bobby Sands refused food in protest at attempts by Maggie Thatcher and the Brits to criminalise the republican struggle.

By October 1981 ten young men would die and we must remind people today of their selfless desire to defeat crimalisation attempts by the British government and commitment to advancing the struggle for freedom.

The aims for which these ten brave men gave their lives are still being fought for today and young republicans are constantly inspired by the sacrifice of these ten brave men in 1981.

Our message today is we would not be criminalised in 1981 and we will not be criminalised today 25 years on.”

Up Ogra Sinn Fein and I hope soon we will see a free and united Ireland. This day Bobby Sands and the other hungerstrikers will smile from heaven. These last days two basque political prisioners have dead in spanish prisions. Spanish dispersal killed them.... The best tribute for the 10 hungerstrikers and for all basque political prisioners killed in spanish prisions: the VICTORY...
