ARAN's Rally Against Canada's Seal Slaughter

category dublin | animal rights | event notice author Thursday February 23, 2006 13:38author by John Carmody - Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN)author email arancampaigns at eircom dot netauthor address ARAN Po Box 722 Kildare, Irelandauthor phone 087-6275579 Report this post to the editors

Please support this special event

2006 could be the last year the Canadian seal hunt takes place. Canada now has a new Prime Minister Steven Harper who spoke out against the slaughter, the boycott of Canadian ‘sea food’ has already blown a $150 million dollar hole in the exports of ‘sea food’ to the United States of America alone! Also Greenland, Italy and the UK are now taking steps to ban the imports of seal skins into the country – now has never being a better time to take part in Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) rally against the seal hunt.

Please join us for the peaceful visual rally outside the Canadian embassy where we’ll call for the slaughter to be stopped and a boycott of Canadian ‘sea food’.

When: Thursday 23rd March, 2006.

Where: Canadian Embassy, 65 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2.

Time: 12noon - 2pm (Stay for as long as you can!)

This rally will be the fourth rally we have organized with last years protest reaching over 50 people. This year we want to make it bigger again - ARAN will have a huge vinyl banner that will read “Canada Stop Killing Seals” and will also be giving out placards that read “Boycott Canadian Sea Food” and “Do Something” We will also be showing the slaughter on a portable DVD player.

Please do your very best to come along to this protest for even just one hour and be sure to forward this email onto everyone you can possibly think of. This may be the very last protest we have to attend to stop the Canadian seal hunt once and for all.

Be sure to check out www.protectseals.org – www.seashepherd.org – www.harpseals.org for more information on the campaign

It has come to my attention that a countless number of cute cuddly snails are being killed in an inhumane way by the compatriots of the ex-actress Brigitte Bardot. I would like to propose a boycott of the French products as a form of protest against the unnecessary slaughter of the innocent invertebrates. Even if these wonderful animals are a nuisance, surely there is a better way to kill them then smothering them in garlic then shoving them into a hot oven.

--Clip showing a plate full of snails in the oven. The snails pathetically wiggle inside their shells disturbing the garlic butter, then expire as the butter melts. Camera pans to a crying child, then shows protesters with "Snails are human too" posters clashing with the French police in riot gear--

Your arguements for this sick seal pup slaughter don't hold any water Sealer. Of course any right meaning person condemns and abhors the products of battery farms for poultry and pigs etc., but how the existance of such practices justifies a group of thugs going around clubbing young seals to death in front of their mothers is beyond comprehension. I hope the boycott of Candian products continues untl their governement sees sense!!.

TO : i agree with the seal hunt - thank you for your comments - i have never known all those facts.
and yes, I can understand comparing killing a cow to killing a seal - both of course for human selfish reasons
however i agree with your comments.

I can see your point - any seal on the ice flows have a much healthier happier life than any cow, chicken, or pig
that are brought up in captivitiy.

I am a vegitarian - but i understand your views and it has definately made me think of what I see on TV and what the Celebs are trying to teach me.

Thanks!

First of all seals were not breed to be walking pieces of meat, how can any of the above people compair then to pigs and cows i do not know, its like comparing and dog (yes decesdent of a wolk tamed and interbreed by man) to a Tiger. They are a part of the natural evolution process without human being interference.

Thank you for your comments – I appreciate them – however your argument was not justified to me for your reasons against the seal hunt, you were more trying to do a personal attack on me, and you do not know the first thing about me.

Number 1) Seals are used for their Fur and their Fats and meat (please know the facts)
Number 2) how is killing a cow a different argument? Cows are slaughtered in a grotesques manner at the neck in a slaughterhouse. Cows are killed for their meat and their skins – so the difference is between the two is….. Oh yeah I forgot killing cows is the mainstream and doesn’t make a good photo opportunity does it?

3) It is obvious you have not have not that much education from the way you are composing your argument I know more about this argument than you or whoever is teaching you that it is wrong – you are 100% allowed to argue your feelings against the seal hunt – and more power to you
and I don’t plan on changing your mind but if I am willing to accept your facts you can accept mine for I know about the seal hunt first hand – so that qualifies me to be more knowledgeable than yourself and who ever your mentor is who receives emails on the next cause and updates from such groups as IFAW, or PETA and your mentor has never stepped foot on an ice flow or did field research on this matter, do I not get credit for knowing my facts??
Let me ask you this – where did you get your information? Your facts? TV? E-mail?
The likes of Paris Hilton protesting the seal hunt yet the next day she is out in her fur coat?
Is this the likes of your hero who you want to live up to ?

4) I do not make money from the seal hunt, I have eaten seal food and it is delicious, just like hamburgers, or chicken burgers. I have purchased seal skin products.
However – if I had a Family of 4 or 5 to feed and it was either to starve or to go out and take part in the seal hunt, earn a hard days honest pay and provide food on the table, clothes on my children’s back, pay the electrical bill so that it is not disconnected in the dead of winter and my children don’t go cold – I know what I would have to do. Before you go mouthing off with your “educated” guesses
Know the facts of the economy in places off the coat of Canada. Fishermen/ Fisherwoman who worked all their lives on the Cod fishery and due to FOREIGN over fishing – they put a ban on the fishing to replenish the cod stocks. These people have known nothing only to fish all their lives and too old to go back to school to start over – There is no work – the out migration numbers are increasing every year – so before you can compare a seal family to a human family – you can’t even go there – a seal does not have to worry about paying bills – or putting clothes on your children’s back, to build a house and provide for your children. To worry about buying nappies for the baby cause you have no money – to worry about petrol for the car, to worry about debt collectors coming to the door – so my friend you cannot compare a seal to a human!!!

5) Also is your IFAW or PETA are so right about the facts on the seal hunt – why do they show a white pelt seal on their website – when they are 100% ILLEGAL to hunt - ???
6) Please remember when debating an argument – don’t get personal it looks so childish and you look so misinformed – 2) I did not make any personal attacks on you. It seems that you are very defensive - did I educate you on facts you were not aware of?

7) Granted the killing of any animal is unsightly. I personally could not do it, but I support those who do take part in various hunts such as the seals, cows, etc. provided they are 1) under regulations, 2) the animal is not endangered 3) the animal is just not killed for its fur.

8) on a final note regarding your Rat comment – picture this – your world - your mother is diagnosed with Breast Cancer – ( God forbid) however no drugs can be given – she is left to suffer & die no treatment can be given.
My world – my mother is diagnosed with Breast cancer (god forbid) due to drug testing on lab rats found a successful cure that removes all traces of cancer– my mother now lives a healthy life and is not 74 still alive 20 years after she was first diagnosed.

I know which world I rather be living in.

to justify the killing of wild animals by saying it is humane seems like hypocracy to me, as there is nothing humane about a mass killing of gods creatures. we do not decide to cull humans even though we are the ones encrouching on the animals natural habitat. i am not suggesting that human life is less important than that of an animal but we are slowing taking over this planet and destroying it. seals have as much right to survival as any of us and the survival of the fittest no longer applies it now appears to be survival of the armed and dangerous. i am a vegetarian and do not agree with any slaughter or for that matter breeding for slaughter. not only are we destroying natural habitats we are ruining the enviroment with our pollution and exhaust fumes which in itself is diminishing the seals natural habitat. to support the seal cull seems to me to be senseless. there is great progress being made in the research areas of contraceptive methods in regards to elephants and maybe some of our energy could be focused on this area or research. surely to find a long term solution would be a better option. i cannot believe that anyone could take pleasure in this act of barbarianism. i do believe people might not have all the information as i certainly dont but it seems to me that the people who are against this have seen that there is something intrinsically wrong with the entire affair.

well, those people that support the hunt for seals really do need to have a reality check! how would you like it, bumbling around with your family and some selfish git shots your brother sister etc for their skin! canadia123 whoever you are, youre a true sicko! as for cows etc being killed to eat thats a different arguement altogether, but to kill a seal for a coat or to make money on is sooo-oo sick! those that have leather coats, bags shoes etc are just as sick as you! as for "seal steak" i must say, you are a bit twisted, what do you do, skin the poor things, make something out of them and sell them then eat the remains!!!!!???? you really are saving money all round! im the sort of person that is against rat extermination too, let the animals be and leave them alone! if they carry diseases SO WHAT! keep away from them, im sure we give them far more diseases than they give us! all i can say to you is you and your customers need to see someone! you sound like an appauling citizen who is out to make the money and make these creatures suffer! they have feelings just as much as we do and if you club or shot them, either one is just as bad! hopefully one day you wont be able to "sell your products proudly" with a bit of luck someone will skin you too! then lets see whos ramting then! as for sir paul, whats he got to do with your behaviour! as much or little he knows about seal hunting is irrelevant, the point is, its people like you that cause pain and suffering to great creatures of ourr world. what will you kill next to pay your mortgage! GET A PROPER JOB LIKE THE REST OF US.......LOOSER!

It amazes me how people can jump on the bandwagon for a cause they know little about. Another thing that amazes is half of those are leather coat – leather shoe wearing people who eat cows / pigs/ and cute little chickens. Where are the protests for these animals? These poor unfortunate animals who are held in captivity and slaughtered? I suppose a Pig rolling around full of muck does not have the same emotional spark as seeing a “CUTE” little seal looking helpless. Where infact those seals have a much healther happier life on those ice flows than the cows/pigs raised in dirty conditions waiting for their timed death.

There are laws and regulations put in place for the seal hunt believe it or not.
The hunting of harp seal pups (whitecoats) and hooded seal pups (bluebacks) is illegal – and has been since 1987. Furthermore, adult seals cannot be harvested when they are in breeding or birthing grounds and younger seals must be weaned, self-reliant and independent.

The method of killing a seal are in 2 formats – 1) 90% of all seals are hunted by a gun 2) The club – or hakapik. The Royal Commission on Seals and Sealing in Canada found that the clubbing of seals, when properly performed, is at least as humane as, and often more humane than, the killing methods used in commercial slaughterhouses, which are accepted by the majority of the public.
American studies carried out between 1969 and 1972 proved that the club or hakapik is an efficient tool designed to kill the animal quickly and humanely. A 2002 report published in the Canadian Veterinary Journal had results that parallel these findings.

As for the whole Larry King interview with Paul McCartney & his new wife it was best summed up by a column written by Rex Murphy from the Globe & Mail:

“….The last time Paul McCartney did anything useful, that is anything remotely connected with what he may actually know something about, was when he hitched a ride on Michael Jackson's then-hyperstar status and recorded the eminently forgettable Say Say Say.
Other than that, and a few ventures at distressing Mozart's ghost by essaying a symphony and, heaven help us, an oratorio, he's "the former Beatle." And good for him. If the world ever wants to know even more than it does already about the biggest bubble on the froth of 20th-century pop music, the Beatles, then Paul McCartney, knight, billionaire, composer of Maxwell's Silver Hammer, is just the person to talk to.
But what he knows about the Newfoundland seal hunt would fit in a gnat's armpit, and what the rest of us should care about how he feels about it would gladden an even more rank receptacle. He's just one more in the endless file of soap-star intellects, preening starlets, sit-com revenants, small-screen action heroes and full-bore Hollywood poseurs, who, over the years, have given an ounce of their time to drop by the ice-floes, park in front of a whitecoat, do the caring press conference, and go back to whatever it is that they do when they're not saving seals.
It's quite a list. Brigitte Bardot, Pierce Brosnan, Richard Dean Anderson, Yvette Mimieux, Sean Penn (pre-Baghdad tourism), Loretta Swit and, to bring matters up to date, übertart Paris Hilton, are just a petty fraction of the names that have found the seal hunt their cause du jour. Ms. Hilton, who, in my view, has caused the world more pain than four centuries of the seal harvest, gave the full power of her T-shirt to the crusade against the hunt when she sported this slogan at the Sundance Film Festival: "Club sandwiches, not seals."
If Paris Hilton and Paul McCartney are on the same page, it has to be a picture book. Throw in every manic animal activist organization, Greenpeace, the Fund for Animal Welfare and the whole camera-mad crowd that have made careers, or sustained tendentious organizations, by publicity assaults on the few Newfoundlanders who actually work at getting a few necessary bucks from the hunt and you have a spectacle of disproportion that would make the angels weep.
Last summer, for a day, it was Make Poverty History. Sir Paul headlined the London concert with Bono for that monstrous hypocrisy.
Multimillionaires protesting world poverty, while keeping their bloated fortunes, is a dissonance that may peal through eternity.
As for Sir Paul and the seal hunt -- who cares? The night before, Larry King had on Roseanne Barr. Larry, Paul, Roseanne -- it's all so . . . yesterday…”
I have Seal skin products – and I show them off proudly!! I also enjoy a tasty bit of seal steak every now and again as well!
