Homeland Security visits student who ordered Mao book

Lecturers fear to invite students to study Al-Qaeda

A well-travelled student at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth was interrogated by agents of the Department of Homeland Security in October because he had ordered a copy of Mao Tse-Tung's book on Communism, The Little Red Book, while researching a paper on totalitarianism.
One of the student's lecturers is considering cancelling a course on terrorism planned for next semester, because it might put his students at risk.
Reported in The Standard-Times on December 17, 2005.

The following is an excerpt from an article on the website of SouthCoastToday.com:

Agents' visit chills UMass Dartmouth senior
By AARON NICODEMUS, Standard-Times staff writer

NEW BEDFORD -- A senior at UMass Dartmouth was visited by federal agents two months ago, after he requested a copy of Mao Tse-Tung's tome on Communism called "The Little Red Book."
... through the UMass Dartmouth library's interlibrary loan program.
The student, who was completing a research paper on Communism for Professor Pontbriand's class on fascism and totalitarianism, filled out a form for the request, leaving his name, address, phone number and Social Security number. He was later visited at his parents' home in New Bedford by two agents of the Department of Homeland Security, the professors said.
The professors said the student was told by the agents that the book is on a "watch list," and that his background, which included significant time abroad, triggered them to investigate the student further.
...
Dr. Williams said he had been planning to offer a course on terrorism next semester, but is reconsidering, because it might put his students at risk.
"I shudder to think of all the students I've had monitoring al-Qaeda Web sites, what the government must think of that," he said. ...

Comments:
I see a couple of profound paradoxes in this story:
1. What kind of state monitors the study of totalitarianism and treats it with suspicion? Big Brother is watching you!
2. How can America deal with Islamism if its citizens are afraid to study it?

Best,
Coilín.

»» something smelled about this story from the start. but in these weird times it seemed plausible. Many other examples of things like this all the time happening int the us of a - unfortunately now those stories wont get the exposure they deserve.

such as, 80,000 Americans are forbidden to be on a airplane. There is no law that prevents them, but Bush signed a dictate, and Bush gets his way.

Federal agents' visit was a hoax
Student admits he lied about Mao book

The UMass Dartmouth student who claimed to have been visited by Homeland Security agents over his request for "The Little Red Book" by Mao Zedong has admitted to making up the entire story.

The 22-year-old student tearfully admitted he made the story up to his history professor, Dr. Brian Glyn Williams, and his parents, after being confronted with the inconsistencies in his account.

Had the student stuck to his original story, it might never have been proved false.

[....]

The student's motivation remains a mystery, but in the interview on Thursday, he provided a glimpse.

"When I came back, like wow, there's this circus coming on. I saw my cell phone, and I see like, wow, I have something like 75 messages and like something like 87 missed calls," he said. "Wow, I was popular. I usually get one or probably two a week and that's about it, and I usually pick them up."

Yes, and as you say on your own blog:
'In all fairness to the left, however, the conservative site Newsmax.com accepted the story, and a reader posted it on Free Republic. In the latter case, of course, the story wasn’t posted by the editorial staff of Free Republic.'

And your blog frequently cites Murdoch media outlets like FOXnews and SKYnews as well as FrontpageMag.com - you seem to dance to what ever tune they play, such as the 'War On Christmas' PUHleeez!

Here on Indymedia.ie people can correct posts with countering information as the news story develops - that's how it works. Only an idiot would accept information from any news source unquestioningly.
(WMD in Iraq, Saddam/911 connection, War on Christmas, and from your blog, that Cindy Sheehan wants more dead American soldiers in Iraq)

Care to explain why your blog doesn't allow comments?

So far, the result of the Homeland Security & Mao book story are some embarrassed local reporters and some 'librul' bloggers and columnists, most of which have posted corrections on their web sites.

And, so far, because of this inaccuracy and falsehood tens of thousands of civilians were not killed.

And, so far, because of this inaccuracy and falsehood Halliburton still has not gotten a no-bid contract.

Get back to working to destroy Israel and undermining the global war on terror. Your domestic work smacks of amateurism.
