“Why don’t you just fuck off and mind your own business, we don’t care about you"

category mayo | environment | news report author Tuesday August 16, 2005 22:02author by Terry via Micheal Report this post to the editors

- Shell/Roadbridge Engineer to Rossport resident and relative of prisoner.

The reality of Shell’s promised “P.R. Blitz” – attempts to provoke trouble on the picket lines.

At 6.40 a.m. today one Rossport resident was at the Ballinaboy picket and got word that a small convoy of Limerick reg. jeeps had been seen in the area. Limerick reg. jeeps in Erris usually being those belonging to Roadbridge, one of Shell’s contractors. On driving back to the Rossport compound he found five jeeps pulled up outside it and seven of the higher echelon staff inside the compound. This included Kevin, one of Shell/Roadbridge’s top engineers, and Paul Gallagher, another one of Shell’s top boys, as well as an Italian, presumably from Sicim.

By 7.10 a.m there was ten picketers at the gate.
At 7.25 a.m. the standard Garda shift change took place (there are now two garda at each development site continually).
By 8.00 a.m. 20 picketers had arrived, a mix of campers and local residents, just before 8.00 a.m. 3 blue collar workers arrived, probably machine drivers, but didn’t attempt to enter the compound.
Between 8.00 a.m. and 8.45 a.m. the engineering staff and white collars were walking out of the compound and speaking to the 3 ordinary workers outside.
At 8.25 a.m. the picketers held the main gate and made it that any one going in or out would go through the adjoining public right of way – a small pedestrian gate, not passable to vehicles.
A Garda inspector who was at this stage present gave out about this to the demonstrators.

By 8.45 a.m. the majority of the white collar staff were now outside the compound, while one was leaving he shoved into a protestor, and when said protestor remonstrated with him and took his photo he said “I suppose that camera is stolen”. This protestor is a relative of some of the prisoners.
Attempts to file a complaint with the Garda, both for the shove and the verbal abuse met with an initial lack of interest on the part of the guardians of the peace (CL 132 and CL 277 and the inspector).

This particular member of Roadbridge/Shell staff then went to his Nissan Patrol 4 by 4, 01 – LM 579, complete with ‘Hey MTV Pimp My Ride’ sticker, and phoned into his superiors saying loud enough for all to hear: “There is nothing here but a shower of wankers”.
Shortly after this Kevin, a Roadbride/Shell engineer says to one local resident (and relative of a prisoner): “Why don’t you just fuck off and mind your own business, we don’t care about you, we don’t care what you want”

As one camper put it there was no attempt to take anything into the compound or to take anything out, or do any other kind of work, a fact which makes it obvious that this was an unsuccessful attempt at provocation.

Ear to the Ground.

In another incident on the picket lines, last Friday at 10.10 a.m., a conversation between Mick Coffey, another contractor, and a security guard was over heard.
The substance of this conversation was that Coffey hopes that the demonstrators will allow them in to dismantle the section of pipeline they have illegally constructed and that he feels they have to get the Rossport Five out of prison as he thinks the pickets will end then,. He was also talking about the possibility of re-routing the pipeline up the estuary – but says that would take two years in the planning process (this option was considered before and rejection due to environmental regulations). This conversation also revealed that the illegally constructed section of pipeline is actually sinking into the bog (most likely as the foundations were not built deep enough).

Whats the significance in the inclusion of the relative to prisoner bit, does one become some form of higher being above the rest of us mere mortals if one happens to be related to the rossport 5

The fact that a protestor is related to one of the imprisoned men is relevant to the piece , especially if some gobshite surveyor is using foul languauge and raving on about how no-one cares that principled family men are in a dirty stinking prison because of foreign thieves .

Anyone closely related to the men would I imagine find this especially offensive . It does not make anyone a "higher being" although if I was related to any of them Id be proud of the fact .

I hope youre actually being paid to show such spite , otherwise youre a sad , bitter and twisted effort rather than a purely mercenary one . Either way it wouldnt be hard to be a higher being than yourself .

easy now, there is nothing wrong with questioning its relevance,

and do you automatically think that people that are in favour of the development are paid by or part of shell, cos that is certainly not the case for me

Why would anyone in their right mind be in favour of this countrys natural resources being given away for free to an outfit like Shell , while honest men are lying in jail for trying to protect their homes and families ? Why your hostility towards the men ?

My point stands , either you are bitter and twisted ( perhaps due to some crackpot ideology) OR youre getting paid ? Explain your motivation please curious .

Im very curious .

Gold in your back yard?

Let's pretend you have a house.
And let's pretend further it has a backyard.
There's gold in that there backyard too.
However, it's 100 metres down.
It would be uneconomical for you to dig it yourself. And there may not be much gold in there. However, there's a chap with a special digger who'll give you 25% of the value of the gold he's prepared to unearth. He'll also buy vittels from the local shop. He'll employ some of your neighbours too.

What do you do?
Let me guess - tell him to go f*uck himself?

The crude remark was the expected response from eeeek to the digger fella.
All imaginary of course, much like his backyard ownership.

"However, there's a chap with a special digger who'll give you 25% of the value of the gold he's prepared to unearth."

Shell etc in this case have made no such promise. They take 100% of the gold. Write off their tax against hole digging expenses.

Just how accurately their eventual profits will be measured is a murky murky issue.

What if the gas is sold in UK and profit is made there - how will irish state ever ever make any benefit from it?

Does anyone trust courrent or similar administrations to try to measure the amount of gas going out of ireland? They have obfuscated facts wrt how much is out there that it verges on treasonous. Are only 'insiders' allowed to have a clear picture of what is there and what might be there. That's what it seems like at present.

An eqitable arrangement is possible but the present one is one GIANT RIP-OFF.

Let me get this straight.
According to eeek, Shell's Corrib exploration will not bring one single euro of revenue to the state. Not one euro?

Who knew?

I suggest you familiarise yourself with how broadly corporations define 'expenses' and how high they are prepared to jump to minimise taxes.

In my opinion it is far from clear that any profits whatsoever will accrue to the consortium in Ireland. The gas is specifically meant to be pumped and sold abroad. So who will measure profits o sale of gas.

I'm not a businessman but if I was one involved in the consortium in mayo I would be doing my level best to ensure the thing ran at a loss in Irish terms. Profit is the singular (and declared) logic of corporations.

"Please give an estimate in monetary terms of how much the irish state will profit from the present deal through taxes on the consortium in the next 20 years?"

It is logical that such estimates are floating around. After all that is what you'd expect from servants of the state making a big deal like this with a corporation.

The truth is imho from information available it won't profit at all except through taxes on wages of workers (if it's lucky').

I'd also predict that dempsey would deny the existence of any estimates or guesstimates and blather on in a flying pig-human manner about various vague 'benefits which would accrue'.

FOI it Vincento- Go on ya good thing - might get info on such estimates before shell become the absolute de-facto legal authority in parts of mayo.

From reading this debate about weather the state benifits from the corrib field or not, i would have to question its relevence to the rossport 5.
So Fianna fail governments bent over and let enterprise energy (now owned by Shell)/statoil and marathon ride them for a gas field. Last i heard was the this was a democracy and fif you don't like what the government does you don't vote for them. So guess what? Don't vote for them.
Last I heard was that the protests were about the safety of a pipeline. So less of the anticapitalist/anarchist/crusty bullshit. It does the rossport 5 no good whatsoever.

This is a good thing. In fact many of the supporters of the 5 men recognise that the gas is good for Ireland and good for mayo. they have genuine safety fears which I believe can and should be addressed. But it is unfair to just attempt to portray this in th way you have.

personally I believe the men shoud purge their contempt and work outside of prison to try and get the safety fears alleviated. this will be far more effective use of their time and their new found celebrity status!

"In Favour" states that the gas is good for Ireland and good for Mayo. I don't know what you mean by "good" in light of two basic points below:

1-Mayo will not be getting any gas, from Corrib or anywhere else.

2-Irish consumers will pay the going commercial rate for gas, whether it comes from Corrib or Venezuela or Baku, so I don't know what you mean when you say that the gas is good for Ireland.
