Corn Cob Bob is the front man for the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association,External link a not-for-profit group that promotes clean energy.

The association had secured an information booth at Major's Hill Park through the NCC, which had even offered a 50-per-cent discount on the usual fees.

But last Wednesday, the commission called to cancel the arrangement after pressure from Shell Canada, a key sponsor for the Canada Day celebrations in the capital.

Kory Teneycke, the executive director of Canadian Renewable Fuel Association, was surprised by the call.

"They said they were very sorry but they said one of their major sponsors had indicated there was a conflict between the message that we were promoting and their company's interests," he said.

A Shell spokesperson said the company's arrangement with organizers meant it had exclusive rights when it came to fuel products.

“It appears a bit of a shell game is going on. Corn Cob Bob was originally welcomed, we did all the proper paperwork, and then we were banned,” said Kory Teneycke, Executive Director of the Canada Renewable Fuel Association. “We thought our message of reducing greenhouse gases by using cleaner, renewable fuels would be a welcome part of Canada Day. Nobody should own Canada Day. It should include all Canadians – even Corn Cob Bob.”

Following the execution of Nigerian environmentalist Ken Saro-Wiwa and its attempt to dump the Brent Spar oil platform in the ocean, Shell appointed a dozen people to oversee its image overhaul. A decade later, Simon Longstaff, one of Shell's twelve and the director of Sydney's St. James Ethical Centre, lashed out at Shell. "The process we went through was thorough and exhaustive, but what concerned me was seeing the marketing arm of the company turn it into a PR exercise as soon as we had finished," he said. "It was a process that should have happened slowly and been led from the top for real change to occur. Leveraging it for advertising and then having the process betrayed by the man at the top sent a very confused message to everyone in the company that wanted real change." Longstaff's comments echo critiques of Shell's operations in Nigeria and apartheid South Africa.
