Revealed: Bono applied to join Fine Gael

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday July 04, 2005 16:52author by Phoenix Report this post to the editors

Exclusive!

Bono (aka Paul Hewson) applied through Garrett Fitzgerald to join Fine Gael while Fitizgerald was leader of the party. He was advised by Fitzgerald to 'think hard' about this move.

Fine Gael was cold to the move because Bono was deemed 'too controversial' and it was felt he would be a loose cannon who could damage the party. In the end, Bono abandoned the idea.

This is the first time that this has been revealed.

For those on the Left, this should be telling with regard to Bono's political inclinations. He ain't no socialist.

Sir Bob called the protesters in Scotland "a bunch of losers" and he ridiculed the anarchist clowns with "white-painted faces" who believed they could "cause world revolution by standing on top of park benches and hitting the police".

Furthermore, he dismissed the protests saying that the Live8 gigs were far more effective. His proof? George Bush watched them on TV and was impressed (thinks Geldof).

Meanwhile, Midge Ure condemned the anti-G8 demonstrators in Edinburgh as "abhorrent" for engaging in "violence".

The Iraq war? Blair's involvement? Violence? Arghhh! Don't mention the war! Fuckers.

There can be no doubt that the arrogance of wealth has made Bono and Geldof what they are.

Today's Daily Mail front page headline quotes Sir Bob on violent Edinburgh protesters. He calls them a bunch of posers. Good coming from him isn't it? Maybe he should have said "scruffy posers".

I think Bono may have been impressed by Garrett's New Ireland Forum and new ideas to change Ireland's economic and political malaise, or he may have just been talking cod-profound bollocks as usual...

"Garret Fitzgerald was credited with moving Fine Gael to the left"

They may have moved a little to the left, but from how far on the right exactly?

author by tompublication date Tue Jul 05, 2005 18:38author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Garret Fitzgerald was credited with moving Fine Gael to the left. Some saw him as a credible alternative to Charlie Haughey. But Ireland 2005 is a different country, a different planet, compared with Ireland 1983. It will probably remain unfathomable to today's Indymedia students.

Dunno about Bono, but Geldof expressed support for Fine Gael back in the eighties. He even claimed that Garret Fitzgerald had "integity". That was one of the things that alerted me to his reactionary politics.
And now we have Bono being shown up as a potential Blueshirter. Shure there's a pair of them in it.

The source for this this story about Bono and Fine Gael is a leading member of Fine Gael. I was given the information yesterday, but obviously the person in question does not want to be named. The source is a very good one.

Perhaps some intrepid journo should follow up the story? Ask Bono to confirm?

"He also seriously tried to be president -of Ireland- and who's to say he won't try again>? "

This is not true. Where is the evidence for this? (and frankly so what if he did - he qualifies).

Whatever about Bob Geldof's appearance and personal wealth to say that he "is an aggressive spokesman for the anti-women lobby" and that "up until this latest trip up ego street, he was constantly ranting about how single mothers were nothing but child-hating moneygrabbers" is completely untrue and the posting should be removed judging by the removal standards of other pieces.

Can the poster please cite the evidence?

In fact, what Geldof rails against in his famous essay "The Real Love that Dare Not Speak Its Name: A Sometimes Coherent Rant" is the one-sided legal system that he argues is weighted against the rights of fathers in custody battles. Does that make him "anti-women"?

"The law is creating vast wells of misery, massive discontent, an unstable society of feral children and feckless adolescents who have no understanding of authority, no knowledge of a man's love and how different but equal it is to a woman's."

well whatever about crusty state of their undergarments, Boner is a happytool for the powergropers of the world. He has shaken hands with more murderers than most military dictators, and gives "yoof" appeal to the likes of Tony Blair, et al. He has also ammassed a VAST fortune, which he does NOT send over to needy people, anywhere.
As for Bob, he is another multimillionaire, who (as well as all the hokey about starving children) is an aggressive spokesman for the anti-women lobby. Up until this latest trip up ego street, he was constantly ranting about how single mothers were nothing but child-hating moneygrabbers (whilst his team of nannies, housekeepers, cleaners, amd other "help" brought up his progeny..)
He also seriously tried to be president -of Ireland- and who's to say he won't try again>?
Both of these people are where they are because they distract us from the hideous reality that is global politics. They tell us that we can appeal to -say- the G8, and they will listen!? Corporate political tools.
Cringe.

Thanks for posting the story but do you have any link to something confirming this, or can you tell us what your source is?

I'm not aware that Bono ever claimed to be a socialist (unlike, say, our current Taoiseach) so I'm not sure who was labouring under than illusion. Socialists don't have a monopoly on compassion for the developing world.

And what's with the disgraceful "smackhead" comments? Geldof has managed to organise (with the help of many others) a well-run logistical operation spanning many continents, not mention doing loads of publicity for it. Not exactly consistent with the image of a heroin addict who can't wash his hair. in response to hidden (abusive) comments - ed
