Why do governments of all parties love raising the minimum wage? It may seem generous, but really it's a tax, says Mark Ellse. The low-paid worker keeps just one sixth of the increase. 85% goes to the government.

Irish arrive at Dissent campsite in Stirling

category international | summit mobilisations | news report author Saturday July 02, 2005 17:39author by sovietpop - wsmauthor email sovietpop at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Just after midnight, the Irish coach arrived into Stirling. There was still a distant light in the sky and they immediately put their tents up. Then close to one, the fine people at the Lowlands kitchen fed all who were hungry. It was very much appreciated.

The camp stirred at around seven, and once again the Lowlands kitchen provided everyone with breakfast . Again much appreciated and very impressive. Some made their way into Edinburgh, others stayed in Stirling to set up the campsite and get the Irish kitchen ready. At nine, there was a site meeting, at which all the barrios sent representatives. At the meeting the praticatilies of running a self managed space was dicussed. Later on this evening the Irish barrio will have its own meeting, which is followed by a Spokes council at which each Barrio sends a representative.
