Shell say: We want you in Prison

category mayo | environment | news report author Saturday June 25, 2005 21:48author by Terry - Shell to Seaauthor email info at shelltosea dot comauthor address www.shelltosea.com Report this post to the editors

Shell’s latest move in driving people from their homes happened at 4pm today, Saturday, June 25th.

One Vincent Troy, acting for solicitors Eugene F. Collins, (Temple Chambers, 3 Burlington Road, Dublin 4), who work for Shell, arrived at the homes of Micheal O’Seighin; retired school teacher and local historian, Vincent McGrath; retired school teacher and musician; and those of three small farmers and owners of the land Shell wish to seize, Willie Corduff, Brendan Philbin, and Philip McGrath. Troy issued a ‘notice of motion’ to the effect that this Wednesday the 29th of June Shell would seek ‘attachment and committal’ for contempt of court. Translated into English this means this multi-national corporation is seeking the imprisonment of these five men for defending their homes, families, livelihoods, land and very lives from an unprecedented high pressure
upstream untreated gas pipeline. A pipeline which even Minister Noel Dempsey admits that the like of which has never been seen in the world before running alongside peoples’ homes.
This arises from an injunction granted to Shell by the High Court on the 4th of April and the peaceful prevention of Shell’s attempted entry on to private lands on the 15th of June.
See here: http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=70289
On this occasion Shell personnel were acting on an unprecedented ‘Compulsory Acquisition Order’ (CAO), issued by statutory instrument by then Minister Frank Fahey (i.e. sneaked through by Fahey in 2001, rather than coming before open Dail debate). Also unprecedented in that CAOs have always only been used for public developments, e.g. state motorways, rather than private developments geared to the profit of international capitalists.

This is despicable. The history of the international oil companies has been one long litany of shady deals, land-grabs, arrogance, - and sheltering beneath whatever State umbrella they can find, when they are challenged. So now, Shell in Mayo want to get their way at all costs and get the State here to send Mayo people who are defending their homes and health to prison.

At the same time Shell in Mayo (Corrib)have been handing out sponsorship (e.g. Ballinrobe GAA and Croí event) to get people to believe they are very nice chaps. Honourable people are thanking Corrib profusely for their "generous sponsorship" - apparently not realising what Shell is up to - right on their own doorstep.

The people of Erris who are non-violently fighting Shell in Rossport in Mayo need the support of all honourable people. The Irish State has let them down. The State that caved in to George Bush by supporting the ignominious war against Iraq is now caving in to Shell's demand and is ready to imprison the people who are defending their homes and health.

There are too many unanswered questions in this saga.

The poeple of Mayo should say "No thanks" to all future Shell (or Corrib or Enterprise) sponsorship.

The same goes for the lesser actors, Statoil and Marathon.

I totally agree with Justin. These people need to wake up and educate themselves a bit. Well done People of Mayo who are so easily bought " Say No to Sponsorship" from Corrib. Lets all stand together and fight. Out with Shell.

While I admire your determination and committment to the cause, and especially those poor people up in rossport, it must be a great strain on all of your finances, can you realistically see a positive outcome to this, and would the involvement of sinn fein not be to the detriment of your cause,

Justin, what are you talking about, Sinn Feinn is a politcal party just like FF and would have great resources to bring to Mayo including a number of sitting TDs and alot of savy activists.
Please bring on this debate people on this site love when people like you start talking through arse.

I can't believe that his is happening, think of these five mens families and the stress and strain it is having on their lives. This is a tragic occurance that the bullies shell had to chose to do this experiment here! thats all it is is an experiment. Oh it's so easy to jsut arrest the poor men for defending their land and their safety. What shell is doing is not safe and thats the bottom line!

Unfortunately once again we see big business and corporations trampling on ordinary citizens rights. We all want the law upheld and the law abiding men of Erris should be supported in their efforts. These men and their families are now being criminalised because all they want is to protect a fragile environment , their homes and ultimately a legacy of scenic beauty.
I hope everybody whom feels strongly about corporate greed supports them in anyway they can, if only to boycott Shell garages.

A word of warning, I think it is also very important that this forum is not allowed to be hijacked by people with their own vested interests eg the PR experts in Sinn Fein and ant- war, anti globalisation interests. This is about the people of North Mayo so please leave your band wagons where they belong.

I have already posted a comment and not known about the postings from mouthpieces from Sinn fein. I am disgusted to see their involvement already. They jump at every opportunity to further their gangsterism and should be kept away from this issue. I will be contacting as many Td's as possible to to try and get as much publicity for this as possible.

Sinn Fein's interest in the Rossport issue is just as dubious as Shell's. Shell want to exploit and trample on ordinary peoples rights. Sinn Fein want to exploit them also, just like they have done over the last 30 yrs in this state. They have done it in Finglas, Ballyfermot, Dublin inner city and any place that people have been disenfranchised by the state and now they are doing it to the good people of Erris

If it wasn't for the people you are denigrating; ie. Sinn Fein, anti-globalisation people, SWP, Higgins and some anarchists, no-one in Dublin would have even been aware of the jailings yesterday. What are you fcking doing? Ringing "Inda" and the other fkers who have been promoting Shell in Mayo for the last ten years.

PS. The men jailed have no problems with the political groupings involved.

I agree ringing TD's is a waste of time on any matter not just this, but only an idiot with a name like Sherlock Holmes with his head stuck in the sand would think that Sinn Fein are not a cancer in this society. Get off this issue, you probably dont even know where Rossport is. Trying to keep this issue sane and moderated wont be possible with arrogant individuals teliing people that their input is wasting other peoples time. This is ypical arrogance of people allied to the IRA/Sinn Fein. The appaling thing is if I repeated any of the above in certain circles or with certain individuals present, I would sufffer similiar fate as Robert McCartney. Ironically, he was a Sinn Fein voter. So not even you are safe from such barabarity if you ever fall out of favour. Wake up.

By the way I am not allied to any politcal party but part of the silent majority in this country whom are sick of Sinn Fein wrapping the Tricolor around themselves to carry out murder and robberies, smuggling just for personal gain and nothing else.

After living in this State for all my life, there is nothing much that shocks me except that there are still morons like you still about whom have no time for other peoples opinions. Open up your tiny brain and realise that not all people in Mayo are IRA/Sinn Fein supporters. And being a republican is not synonomous with being Shinner. Slan Go Foill!!

Mr Healey

Your attacks on republicans is a sad reflection on your take of this important issue, the "legal" detention of citizens for the basic right of protecting their homes, families and community from foreign exploitation...

Like it or not this issue has special resonance to those of us living in the six counties.

Who can see sad comparisons between the way the "state" makes dissent a crime and criminalises opposition.

Your rantings seek to divide not unify. These five citizens must be freed and their homes and communiy protected from foreign and domestic exploitation.
As we all do.

author by Gerard Healypublication date Thu Jun 30, 2005 14:12author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Please do not confuse my distrust and distaste for Sinn Fein with my support for the 5 mayo men. I know the area very well and know and respect their way of life. I do not know where you come from and quite frankly this is about Rossport and not the 6 counties. Once my "rants" as you put it make the point that you do not have to be a Sinn fein/IRA supporter to be a republican. My late father was a dyed in the wool republican of the old style and was utterly disillusioned in his later years by the behaviour of republicans. You have no moral high ground. Your heading "By Any means necessary" speaks volumes about your attitude to tolerance and freedom, As an Irish Citizen living in the 26 counties, I resent people like you hijacking our Tricolour and trampling on my opinions and rights. You have something in common with Shell after all. I willend by writing one name:Robert McCartney

from the mast.

Is a popular song where I live ( Ireland )I can only say that it is a sad indication on how corrupt the 26 have become when a call for solidarity to injustice in Mayo is attacked and when citizens like you Mr Healy dance on the graves of the dead to make cheap and basically ignorant statements..which only divide and confuse the issue.

It would be a disgrace to fuel your 26 county bigot-tory on this issue and in the spirit of freedom which I believe in i hope that these five citizens are freed as quickly..and I have e-mailed their plight to all who want to know worldwide...solidarity is strength by any means necessary..

I am sure you are right. Lets not confuse the issue. The most important thing is justice for these men. In the South here we have all been let down by the Police, the Judical System and the wealthy establishment not to mention banks, politicians and the likes of Shell. Solidarity for the Rossport 5 is crucial but should b e clouded by pseudo support by organisations and people whom are using these people to further their own agenda,
We can all do our bit, big or small, hit them where it hurts, pass by shell and statoil staions and email/phone shell to let them know we are doing this.I do not agree with your "by any means approach" This is the currency of terrorism
