Death Ships descend on Cork

category cork | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Friday June 17, 2005 16:50author by John Jefferies - Cork Anti-War Campaign Report this post to the editors

Ships of six NATO countries, including Iraq occupiers arriving in Cork

Cork Capital of Culture becomes capital of Killer Ships.

Warships from six NATO countries are arriving in Cork on so-called courtesy visits in Cork's year as European Capital of Culture.

Cork Anti-War Campaign is organising a protest demonstration this Sunday, 19th June at the city's Custom House where already on warship Britain's HMS Grafton stands at the junction of the Eamon DeValera and Michael Collins Bridges, guarded by members of the Garda Armed Response Unit with their Uzi submachine guns along with regular Gardai.

Ships from Britain, Australia, Poland, Pakistan, Holland and Germany - all members of NATO and four of them leading supporters of the war and occupation of Iraq.

Cork Anti-War Campaign strongly opposes the visit of these killer ships to Cork as being wholly inappropriate and hardly having anything to do with culture.

The first demonstration will be held this Sunday at 3pm when the UK and Australian ships will be present. A further protest will be held the following week when the other NATO ships will have arrived.

There are no warmongers here except for the 'peace movment' who never seem to condemn voilence done by terrorists...........

I wonder why?

wow, the moaning "leave the warmongers alone brigade" got up on the wrong side of bed this morning didn't they.

Why don't you stop beating your wives and kids and stay sober for a while eh?

(it's as well founded as the assumption that all peace activists avoid gainful employment and soap)

can any of you crusties actually tell me what nato actually stands for as you seem to grasp the concept of it!

Britain, Australia, Poland, Pakistan, Holland and Germany - which four of these are leading supporters of the war and occupation of iraq?

Every ship has the potential to be a "death ship".
The civilian container ships bring more death to the world than any of these in the grey funnel line on a daily basis, and nobody protests.

Most of the shipment of weapons, landmines and illegal drugs to and from third world nations are done with container ships. The dreadful trade of human trafficing has for many years been done using container ships.

The Oil tankers that carry polluting fossil fuels around the world indirectly cause more death and destruction than any little warship ever will.

Truck ferries are used in time of "war" to ferry tanks and missiles to foreign theaters of war. The British Imperial fleet that sailed south in 1982 to wage war on the Galtieri dictatorship invasion of the Falklands was made up of a fleet that consisted of 50% civilian vessels.

Why limit the protests to pure naval vessels?

I fully agree that warships from NATO and other aggressor countries should not be allowed visit neutral states such as Ireland. However, we need to be careful to identify these intruders properly. Australia and Pakistan are not NATO members. The members of NATO are: Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Rep, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States

first time poster
long time hater of crusties

Where some of you dropped repeatedly on your heads as children? those ships and seamen/women are serving their nation, they work hard and are guests of our country,. I think you should all be ashamed of yourselves, belittling their professions like this, i know this is falling on deaf ears, but really, if i was asked what is a good example of scum in our nation today it is people like all of you, get a life and a proper job, like those brave men and women aboard those ships.

my two cents

The ships have'ent killed anybody, they are little more then large lumps of metal.
Their crews are guests of the city of Cork, and are entitled to a proper welcome not the hysterical ranting of the so-called anti-war movement.

Don't be too hard on the ships. Try interpreting the issue the way the National Rifle Association would: -Ships don't kill people, people kill people!

author by Badmanpublication date Sat Jun 18, 2005 17:50author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Their weaponery? The fact that they are designed with the sole purpose of killing? Methinks you've over-indulged on newspeak.

What exactly do war-ships do, pray tell, other than prepare for orders to kill people?

author by jackpublication date Sat Jun 18, 2005 00:57author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Exactly what makes these ships killer ships?
The tone of your article seems to be nothing more then inflamatory.
It also gives me the impression that you know nothing at all about ships, navys, or anything at all really.
