Sinn Fein Delivers Profit Windfall for Developers

category dublin | environment | news report author Tuesday June 14, 2005 12:09author by SP Member - SP/CWI Report this post to the editors

In January of this year, communities in Swords and Dublin 15 were celebrating the success of Socialist Party motions, that secured a green belt zoning on hundreds of acres of land, which had been targeted for residential development.

At the end of May, the Development Plan changes had to be ratified by the Councillors.

However in a disgusting move, Sinn Fein sided with Fianna Fail and Fine Gael to overturn the decision for 140 acres in Swords and restore the residential zonings. Their Councillor did not participate in any of the discussions during the months of meetings on this plan and yet it was with that one vote that all the campaigning of the community was betrayed.

We need, as the above contributor has said, to stop housing in Dublin. Those working classes can get uppity with a gaff.

we need housing, but we need schools, facilities and roads to go along with them. Take ongar in blanchardstown for example, a place the size of a fair sized irish town built with none of the above. The same clonsilla road (clonsilla was a village ten years ago) is supposed to cater for all the traffic, and guess what it can't! Not to mention the very shoddy state of some of the buildings. Now they want to add another 3,000 houses to it. Again minus schools or roads or any other basic facilities. And in years to come when there will be massive social problems will the developers be blamed? Of course not it will be the "scumbag" youth of the area. The party is attempting to prevent ghettoes being created. It's not rocket science it just means building the facilities with the houses, a little less profit for the builders and speculators (who incidently buy a large proportion of the houses and apartments, not the working class). Social problems don't come out of nowhere, they are being created right under our very noses.

(Incidently there's already been two murders in ongar and the place isn't even finished yet)

Now, my political friend, you are being disingenuous. What we are against is not housing, but against speculators and property developers making a fortune from throwing up thousands more houses BEFORE proper infrastructure is put in place to cope. If you knew antything about the folks of Dublin West you would know that they are PISSED OFF at the lack of public transport infrastructure and school places for their kids. Just because you can't afford a million euro house in the city centre, doesn't mean to say that you should have to put up with a complete lack of services in your area.
