Did Keir Starmer's speech blaming 'far-Right' outsiders for organising the unrest in Southport and singling out the threat they posed to Muslims contribute to the violence by Asian counter-protestors that followed.

Tommy Robinson's "Uniting the Kingdom" march in July was widely condemned as "far Right". But 'nice Jewish girl' Jacqui Fisher went on along because of its stand against antisemitism and found it anything but.

Get Up Stand Up leafletting Round 2

category dublin | worker & community struggles and protests | news report author Monday May 16, 2005 23:59author by Gregor Kerr - WSM - 1st May branch - pers. cap.author email kerrgregor at yahoo dot co dot ukauthor phone 086-1501151 Report this post to the editors

A sunny Saturday afternoon in Dublin city centre

Round 2 of the get up stand up leafletting took place last Saturday afternoon (14th May).

Round 2 of the get up stand up leafletting took place last Saturday afternoon (14th May). And while the numbers taking part were lower than round 1, which took place after the Mayday march( see http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=69665), what we lacked in numbers we made up for in enthusiasm. Meetings, conferences, medical training and weddings combined to ensure that many of our activists were otherwise occupied but nevertheless those of us who did turn up distributed about 1,000 leaflets in about an hour and a half. Shopworkers in the Grafton Street-South William Street area and in the St. Stephen's Green Shopping Centre were leafletted with the leaflet detailing basic workers' rights and urging them to join a trade union and stand up for their rights. We got a very positive response from everyone and the leaflets were eagerly accepted by all. And of course the fact that the sun was shining made for a very pleasant stroll along the street popping in and out of the shops.
The next leafletting session will take place on Thursday 26th May when we hope to leaflet the Jervis centre, ILAC Centre and O'Connell Street. We're meeting up outside the Jervis Centre (Henry St. entrance) at 7pm and plan on following up our activity with a short meeting in the lounge of the Teachers Club (36 Parnell Square) around 9pm. This meeting will discuss ideas for taking our campaign to such far flung places as Dundrum 'Town Centre', The Square in Tallaght, Blanchardstown, Liffey Valley and various other suburban locations!! So forget about weddings etc. and come along, get involved - the more the merrier. It'll be easy to remember the date, it's the night after Liverpool are going to win the European Cup. See you there.

On Thursday night of last week (26th May), about dozen of us distributed about 1,000 'Stand Up For Your Rights' leaflets to shopworkers in the Jervis Centre, ILAC Centre and O'Connell St. It was another successful outing in which the leaflets were gratefully received by workers many of whom we know are not receiving their statutory entitlements in terms of minimum wage, holiday entitlements etc. It was heartening to receive reports from Ray O'Reilly of the Independent Workers Union - one of the unions listed on the leaflet - that he has experienced an increase in the number of people contacting him looking for assistance and enquiring about joining the union as a direct consequence of the leafleting we have been doing.
The meeting of the campaign which was due to be held the same evening did not happen as people had other commitments but we will be organising a meeting shortly to discuss the extension of the campaign. A notice will be posted on indymedia when the meeting is organised.
We need involvement of as many people as possible. Even if you can't make any of the advertised leafletting sessions, why not get in touch with us and take some leaflets and dish them out to shopworkers etc. as you go about your daily business.
