Galloway’s election success gives Blair a bloody nose

category international | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Friday May 06, 2005 11:18author by Dominic Carroll Report this post to the editors

The election of Respect’s George Galloway in the UK general election should be welcomed by the anti-war movement – not least because it is a product of that very movement. Opinions differ, of course, as to the wisdom of the Respect project and the calibre of Galloway himself. Be that as it may, this election result should be acclaimed.

George Galloway often comes across as an avowed Marxist to me. He's certainly vehemently anti-American and evidently 'pro' any of its opponents. It occurs to me that fury at the fall of Communism in Europe is behind his attempts to inflame Muslim opinion against the US. He's using Respect as a platform from which to unleash Muslim fundamentalists as his proxies against it in revenge. He couldn't care less what happens as a result, as long as it includes the end of the US. A Marxist who despises religion fooling Muslims into falling in line behind him -- now I've seen everything.

Whenever a figure emerges at the head of a movement that threatens to challenge some aspects of the existing order, the stories of personal corruption are multiplied.
They said Scargill took money from Ghadaffi and that he was embezzling the miners' strike fund. It was all a lie but helped to discredit him among some who claimed to be on the left.
Galloway faces the same fate. Forged documents, endlessly replayed handshake with Saddam and now the Pentagon spooks have come up with another Zinoviev letter.
These are not "questions that need to be answered" but a campaign of character assassination. But some people never learn! Our rulers tell lies about the war and about those who oppose it. Cop yourself on!

Of course, if this report had been released last week, the IMC brigade would have smelt another Bush-Blair conspiracy.

A US Senate committee report published today claims to have uncovered "significant evidence" that the former Labour MP was allocated millions of barrels of oil from the Saddam regime. It bases its conclusions on previously disclosed documents from the Iraqi ministry of oil and interviews with senior officials of the regime.

The US report concludes: "The evidence obtained by the sub-committee, including Hussein-era documents from the ministry of oil and testimony from senior Hussein officials, shows that Iraq granted George Galloway allocations for millions of barrels of oil under the oil-for-food programme.

"Moreover, some evidence indicates that Galloway appeared to use a charity for children's leukaemia to conceal payments associated with at least one such allocation."

Galloway has a LOT of questions to answer. Read the reports @:

Not that I vote BUT first past the post system they have in UK is so undemocratic. People fearful of wasting their vote for the main parties. Preferential system is more democratic. The reason why Labor were elected in New Zealand in the early '80's is that two right wing parties ran and split the right vote. the reason why Labor lost later was that two left parties ran and split the left vote

Whether you're pro-war, anti-war, or have no opinion on it, the fact this man won is absolutely horrid. He's best pals with Tariq Aziz, responsible for the gassing of Kurds at Halabja and of personally shooting . A man who has labelled Iraqi trade unionsts as "quislings". A man who called for the Arab states to unite with Saddam to conquer Israel (oh yes, how so "anti-war", how so pacifist!).

“Sir… we salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability… We are with you. Until victory! Until Jerusalem!”

He's not even left-wing, for heaven's sake:

http://www.workersliberty.org/node/view/3195

"On his own account , Galloway “couldn’t live on three workers’ wages” and “needs £150,000 a year to function properly as a leading figure in a part of the British political system” (Scotsman, 19 May 2003)."

“I can’t accept that [a woman’s right to choose], because I believe in God” (Independent, 5 April 2004).

"Asked why he drives a Mercedes if he was so passionate in his support
of MG Rover, Mr Galloway replied: "I drive a Mercedes because there is
no Rover equivalent for the tasks my Mercedes has to perform. I wish
there was."

In his book, he blames "Kosovo for importing drugs, prostitution, people trafficking, crime and fundamentalist terrorism to England."

This man is the future of progressive politics, eh? Anyone who supports him should be ashamed of themselves.

Noel, you really don't have a clue do you. Galloway overturned a 10,000 (think about it, a 10,000) labour majority to win that seat. His victory had nothing to do with "anti-semitism" (swearword of choice for warmongers nowadays)- rather King lost, mirroring the trend around Britland, becuase she is a New Labourite slavishly loyal to Blair. The Lib Dems made significant gains becoming the second party in many constituencies- and this in a first past the post system - it would be interesting to see how they would get on if the system was PR. The pro-war Tory Party didn't capitalise on the swing away from New Labour- as Howards resignation shows.

they've got a "rebel" in east london, who really isn't that much of a "rebel", he's not going to attract other "rebels" who are more "rebelious" to his new party, and if you examine the last months he voted with rather than against the Labour government. If comparable at all to Ireland, he's a PD rebel to the FF machine. & all at the cost of just one seat, meanwhile a "loyal" MP takes Glasgow as he prepares to speak for those who support "iraqi resistance" in London and bring them all along to clinics, and meetings and out into the open. Just what they wanted. A Iraqi grass roots debate in London as "terror target number one" and not in Glasgow or Bradford which don't really figure highly on the Al Q hitlists. Fact is the Liberals manifesto-ed a pull out of Iraq, they were "the anti-war party" and voted against it, and they got between 20 and 24% of the vote for it not only in their heartlands, but out in the wilderness where retired people go to get their heads together. Galloway voted with the crossbenchers (liberals) to oppose New Labour from the beginning of his "rebellion", the "rebels" were spun as old labour hang-ons (in the scottish mould) who couldn't get the bleeper instruction modern day new Labour whip thing together.
And his record on other issues is above to trawl.

I'm not sure I buy the anti-war victory angle.

Nationally the only party standing on an anti-war policy were the Liberal Democrats, and although gaining some seats they still finished a dim and distant third.

As for Gorgeous, his narrow victory has a lot to do with the dramatic recent rise in anti-semitic sentiment from young newly registered Asian voters.

By my reckoning it's 3 - 1 against the anti-war movement. Howard, Bush and Blair against the Spanish white flag waver.

Galloway is a liability for Respect and would be for any progressive organisation. But thats not the point. Galloway has been elected as an anti-war candidate. Right now it doesn’t matter what we think of him. What Blair and the British establishment thinks is what matters.

There are 646 MPs in the UK. So, Respect only needs to win another 323 seats before they become of importance. Actually, Galloway's views are not particularily left-wing, but more traditional Irish Catholic, which is of course his background. He's strongly pro-life and anti-abortion. In fact, his anti-abortion views are what appealed to quite a lot of muslims and christians in his constituency. I think he used to write a coulmn in the Catholic Herald. He's quite rich and quite rightly not ashamed of that. He owns a house in Portugal, I do believe. A bit of a ladies man too, I hear. I don't find him too bad a chap, but what socialists see in him is beyond me.

I have no love for Tony Blair. I think he's a shit.
But I welcome the end of Saddam Hussein and the end the Western vile policy of both supporting and then being weak in confronting the mass murdering beast.
I'm glad that Iraq has had elections and that some form of democratic future is possible.
However I cannot have any sympathy for the Islamic terrorist scum masquerading as freedom fighters and I certainly cannot stomach George Galloway.
The guy is a fucking cunt.
On January 18, 2005 this is what he had to say on Newsnight:
George Galloway was on the show as part of John Harris's feature on 'left alternatives' to Labour.

Although Harris is anti-war and sympathetic to RESPECT he did ask Galloway about his support for the Iraqi resistance. Here is what he said:

John Harris: [to camera] I asked him his views on what
he calls the 'Iraqi resistance'.

George Galloway: Actually, the Iraqi resistance does not target its own civilians. But the people that are being fought by the resistance in Iraq are the people that are working for the occupation.

JH: I can imagine someone who had no job, who lives in Baghdad and is trying to feed their family and they've had a lot of dark nights of the soul about this, but to provide themselves with an income they join the burgeoning Iraqi police force.

GG: Our country in 1941 stood alone when the Americans were watching the war on newsreel. Hitler was at the Channel Ports and might have crossed. If he had crossed he might have occupied our country. If he had occupied our country there would have been a British resistance. And no matter how hard up a family in Buxton was, the idea that they should join Hitler's occupying police force and not become a target of 'us', the British resistance, is preposterous. You and me would have been in the British resistance.

JH: Do you think there is a moral equivalence between Hitler's occupation ...

GG: Absolutely.

JH: ... the Nazi occupation of France for example?

GG: What's the difference? For the inhabitants of Abu Ghraib prison there is no difference at all. For those whose houses have been flattened by the invader, there is no difference at all. For those who are being rounded-up in the night and taken off with bags over their head, there is no difference at all.

So for Galloway murdered Iraqi election workers, trade unionists, democrats, schoolkids getting sweets in the street are the equivalent of those who collaborated with the Nazi occupation in Europe.

And as one emailer has pointed out to me - what does Galloway mean by 'fought' when he refers to the resistance? He says "the people that are being fought by the resistance" - Hadi Saleh was 'fought' by his murderers, unarmed election workers are being 'fought' in the street, Nepalese migrants are having their heads 'fought' off?

but some of it's missing his first 275 votes, before he got the rebel profile and was hadn't even got the mail column and wasn't even called on to declare all his other interests :-

Of the "Labour rebels" he is one who has continued the curve from the first labour landslide, and counts on many friends in the New Labour party and not as many enemies as snoozer might think he has. It remains to be seen whether his election to Bethnal Green will centre "muslim" radical political debate in London (as Millwall would like) rather than Bedford, or if he has been effectively neutralised. Considering his poor speaking record and the weighting of the written question and white and green paper rules of the House, one would not expect to hear or read a Galloway speech in any Hansard soon. Considering the files on the others rebels and how they fared in yesterday's vote it also seems unlikely that Galloway will act as a beacon to a new "left of Labour" New Labour party organisation. He is not an early 21st century equivalent to the SDP and indeed the LibDem party votes to the "left" of him on several occasions.

all the same, he replies to faxes.-
Send him a congrats, from doozer file land.

You will notice that he rebelled on 32 seperate occasions. He started to rebel on 17th February 1998 on an Iraq debate.
He was joined in that rebellion by these MPs:-
Abbott, Ms Diane
Barnes, Harry
Bennett, Andrew F
Canavan, Dennis
Clapham, Michael
Cohen, Harry
Corbyn, Jeremy
Dafis, Cynog
Galloway, George
Gerrard, Neil
Grant, Bernie
Jones, Ieuan Wyn (Ynys Mon)
Livingstone, Ken
Llwyd, Elfyn
McDonnell, John
Mahon, Mrs Alice
Michie, Bill (Shef'ld Heeley)
Sarwar, Mohammad
Simpson, Alan (Nottingham S)
Skinner, Dennis
Smith, Llew (Blaenau Gwent)
Wareing, Robert N
Wigley, Rt Hon Dafydd
Wise, Audrey
Wray, James

He as also rebelled on Northern Ireland bills, and human embrionology.

He voted against the AntiTerrorism removal of sunset clause bills on all hearings in 2001.

He rebelled the New Labour whip on reform to the immigration laws clause 126 power to search for evidence at every reading earning him party disciplinary action.

He replied within 14 days to 50% of messages sent via FaxYourMP.com during 2004 — 398th out of 590 MPs.
http://www.faxyourmp.com/

His most important written question in the last session of parliament was this on the 23rd of March 2004:-

"To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assistance the Government will afford to UK nationals formerly detained in Guantanamo Bay who have since been freed without charge in the UK to obtain redress and compensation from the US Administration; and if he will make a statement."

To which the secretary of state Chris Mullen replied-

I am aware of reports that the British nationals recently released from Guantanamo Bay may be intending to seek redress and compensation from the US Administration. The question of how they proceed, and whether they pursue legal action, is a matter for the men and their legal representatives.

He is the director of a media company Finjan Ltd, he recieves (£85,000-£90,000) for writing a column in the Mail on Sunday, and holds a non-renumerated twice monthly column in the Morning Star.

He has received from the Exchequer as wages, expenses and additional cost allowances-

2003- 2004 £107,593 (541st of 658 MPs) 2002 - 2002 -2003 £126,759 (54th of 659 MPs)
2001 -2002 £84,773 (414th of 658 MPs)

you will notice that in 2002 to 2003 his cost was highest this was due to his then added staffing requirements, he employed a translator and additional researched during his prolonged rebellion to the Immigration law clause 126.
In his final days as a Labour MP he claimed over £3000 travel allowances.

I hope this helps you appraise his past performance as a member of the House of Commons and thus evaluate what work he may do in the future sitting on behalf of his new constituents.

By the way, for me it's definitely the latter, but in your case, I'd imagine it's the former.

But for other reasons. The SWP thought they controlled RESPECT. But with Galloway elected let's all watch the tail wag the dog. Go forth Gorgeous George and create chaos. Callinicos, Rees, German, Bambery and Harman make very good Dr. Frankenstein's.

I don't know that it's such a great victory for the Anti-War Movement. Maybe Galloway has tapped into the alienation of significant numbers of the East End muslim population, but beyond that what is he offering. His suggestion that any resistance to US occupation is potentially progressive, just isn't feasible in my book. There are some decidely reactionary elements within that resistance and that needs to be acknowledged. I have never bought the line that my enemy's enemy is my friend - sometimes he/she is just a clever opportunitst with an agenda I don't share

I was actually sad to hear of Oona King's defeat. Galloway will implode sooner or later just as soon as all those conservative muslims find out how he treated his muslim wife
