Here is the debate

Lawrence Cox debates with
SWP’s Kieran Allen
this weekend in Trinity College on ‘Does the Movement need
Political Parties’.

The debate is part of a wider conference,
Marxism 2004, which is organized by Trinity College SWSS.

Lawrence Cox was one of the spokespersons for the Dublin
Grassroots Network during the Mayday protests last year. He
has written extensively about the need to develop inclusive social
movements.

Kieran Allen s a member of the Irish Anti-War Movement and
has played a key role in advocating a strategy of mass
resistance. He describes himself as a revolutionary socialist and
has been deeply involved in t Marxist movement for many years.
He argues that the ant capitalist movement and revolutionary
socialist parties need to work hand in hand.

Many of the themes of this debate have surfaced on Indy media
over the years – though sometimes marred by abusive,
personalized and anonymous commentary.

Marxism 2003 provides an opportunity to get out from behind
the comparer screen and engage with the issues in a live debate.

Tickets for Marxism 2004 can be booked in advance by
phoning 01 87226872 or by e mailing ../mailto:info@swp.ie.

I like that, insult people and the system you're advertising on to get them to come to your event nice...

The blurb's a bit misleading - I'm not speaking for Dublin Grassroots in any way. Tried to make that clear when I was asked to speak, but it looks as though it got lost in transmission.

Just thought that was worth mentioning for DGN participants, who might otherwise wonder where this was coming from - part of being in a non-hierarchical organisation is that you don't tend to find people speaking on your behalf unless you've agreed what they're going to say.

Laurence,

the latest Marxism 2004 timetable is now available at

http://www.swp.ie/html/marxism2004/Marxism%202004%20Timetable.doc

and your meeting with Kieran Allen has you down as a member of the DGN and not as a spokeman or as anyone in a "leadership" position as you may be suggesting. Sorry for any mistunderstanding.

Thanks

We are happy to confirm that Laurence Cox is not speaking on behalf of GRN but in an individual capacity. Following a request from Laurence I have asked the Indymedia editors to correct the possible ambiguity.
With that out of the way the debate between two activists from different perpectives will I am sure be of interest to many who follow discussion on this site and elsewhere.
Hope to see you there.
