It's not CO2 that drives the climate, says astrophysicist Dr Henrik Svensmark. Its the Sun and cosmic rays. But you won't hear about this because only one viewpoint is now allowed in the pseudo-science of climate.

anti-mcdonalds/world hunger day

category cork | anti-capitalism | news report author Sunday October 17, 2004 14:25author by bob dobbs - cork food not bombsauthor email corkfnb at wildmail dot com Report this post to the editors

A group of us in Cork decided to do something to mark international anti-mcdonalds day, and so the day before we collected food to be thrown out from local supermarkets and bakeries. The next morning we met up at a friends house and struggled with our cooking skills, and managed to whip up sum vegetable soup, and vegi burgers and hummous, which we then distributed with with bread and fruit outside our local mcdonalds.

All went went well, many interested folks came up and chatted, ate, and enjoyed a cash free, healthy meal. We met lots of different folks some hungry, some friendly, some bemused, but mostly supportive, apart from the obligatory geezer shouting 'get a job'.
At one point the manager came out and asked why it was his resturant that was picked on, as his food was as healthy as anywhere, he seemed to take it very personally, and it was explained that it wasn't just about health and wasn't an attack on him personally, but on the exploitative, enviromentally damaging, and generally callous policies of mcdonalds corporation, which were outlined in the leaflet we gave him, which he chose to ingnore, and came out with a chicked salad 'on the house' to prove just how healthy his food was, which was later retured to the manager by a concerened passer-by who wanted to complain about the gross amount of packaging on said salad.
All in all a very enjoyable day, heres to many more free food events, full bellies and thinking peoples.
If anyone wants to get involved in cooking, collecting, distributing food, or any other aspect of food not bombs, or would like them at their protest of event, please contact corkfnb@wildmail.com. Against the violence of hunger worldwide, for freedom, community and laughter. Well done and hertfelt thanks to all involved.

"Salads in general are a bit of a myth," she said. "If you just eat the salad, then great, but once you've put the dressing with cheese, oil and bacon on it then it can become very unhealthy. http://www.mcspotlight.org/media/press/mcds/eveningstandard030804.html

So is there a risk that the next time May Day marchers trash a branch of McDonald's they will train their sights on Pret? "Perhaps," says Metcalfe. "But the proof is in the pudding. We've developed a relationship of trust with our customers over many years. People may have differences with McDonald's about their supply of food but those issues don't apply to Pret."

Quote; 'we collected food to be thrown out from local supermarkets and bakeries. '. Question; How safe is it to consume food which is being thrown out by supermarkets and bakeries. If it's been thrown out, does it not follow that it is unfit for sale and therefore unfit for human consumption?

Stunningly this is not unusual in the EU. There are several million who suffer food poverty in the UK, several million in Spain etc.,
Food Poverty means that they do not have enough disposable income (after tax and housing) to ensure RDA of protein and vitamins, to eat fresh meat or fish or enough fresh vegetables or to vary their carbohydrate intake. Typically they suffer from mineral and vitamin difficiencies which though not chronic (as in the 3rd world) do contribute to general ill health and _reduce_ life expectancy.
Food Poverty means that they regularly eat food which is sold at reduced price to clear, (on or after the sell by day).
Food Poverty is not new. Europeans of the age group born in 1930s to 1950s are typically shorter of stature, have suffered more dental problems and were "to be technical" under-nourished. That generation compares ironically with those born in the 1960s to 1980s many of whom show signs of obesity and though not "under-nourished" are not properly nourished. PArents who never had enough on their plate, had children who were fed too much animal based protein, and animal material that had been grown on hormones resulting in a rapid increase in average fat to muscle ratio.

It is not unusual for the poorest urban class of marginalised citizens to eat from bins. Though it differs from culture to culture.

Nor is it unusual for the poorest urban areas in Europe to have levels of illiteracy which should be "stunning".

What is unusual is the consistent ignoring of this reality by mainstream media, and TV.
Truth is we are not all happy, we are not all beautiful, we are not all proud owners of homes and cars, and we are not thinking about how to spice up the evening meal.

Just one think - remember that food must be cleaned, especially if you are "recycling" in mediterranean climates, there are a lot more parasites and bugs and roaches about in hotter climates and that free meal could be mean a dose of worms or the shits, so WASH your food and COOK it well. & it helps if you eat it slowly.
