category international | politics / elections | other press author Friday October 15, 2004 12:48author by iosaf Report this post to the editors

published today in The Guardian.

The polls were carried out in the following countries-
Canada, France, UK, Russia, Spain, Israel,
Japan, Australia, Mexico and South Korea.

The results signal 80% of the known universe favour Kerry over Bush (of course)

As such they don't account for everyone who lives in the world, and only a very small sample of approximately 10,000 adults who were asked a series of questions.

And the above is relevant to the outcome of the next US presidential election exactly how???

Spanish readers lead the world in Bush dissatisfaction, followed by France, S.Korea, Mexico and Canada.
No surprises there.
Israel leads the world in Bush approval.
In fact the 1000 adults interviewed by Haretz were the only sample bunch where more than 50% approved Bush and approved the invasion of Iraq.
Koreans and Mexicans are the mosy likely to feel afraid visiting the States.
Japanese are those who's opinion of the USA has declined the most in the last 3 years.
Canada and France feel the most threatened culturaly by the USA.

read the results.

If you'd like to organise your own poll, you'll need a call centre, presently these are cheapest in India. If you hire a call centre in Europe you will have to pay between 5eu and 10eu an hour!!! to the person who makes the calls for you, and a further 5eu to 10eu an hour to the "monitor" who listens in making sure the whole questions is asked.
You will have to phone interview over a 1000 people, for margins of error, it is generally better to call around 1006 people. This means hassling around 2000 people at tea-time or whenever it is they really need to tend to children, watch TV or exchange vital bodily fluids with their partner. Afterwards you'll need a qualified member of the International Market Research community to tot up the results with a calculator and put the data through a pie chart, this will cost you around 25eu to 35eu an hour.

Market Research is one of the few jobs left open to people of "peculiar appearance", and call centres in Europe abound with crusty types and young super pierced up workers who couldn't find a career in local radio. You might like to think about that, the next time you are "trying to get the dinner ready / putting the kids to bed / catching up on the soaps / sampling your partners vital bodily fluids".
